Shipping an engine block
How does a person ship an engine block? I bought a big block, crankshaft, and connecting rods and I need it shipped from California to North Dakota. How much does a bare block weight. FedEx wants over $1,000...

DHL's Freight department quoted a reasonable $360 to ship my small block 400. That quote was for a fully assembled long block with tranny on same pallet. Call DHL and ask to speak to the Freight department. Anything over 150 lbs is carried by a different division.

truck freight is going to be your cheapest bet i shipping a chrysler 727 tranny from here to missouri for 165 bucks through roadway. they dont really care about weight its more a size thing

I purchased a crate motor from Pace Performance and they charged me $260 to ship it. It was crated (imagine that) and also included all of the engine accessories from intake and carb to alternator and starter. Got there in 3 days. They did require that I have a fork lift or ramp to get it off their truck.

Try to pick it up at their terminal to avoid extra delivery charges. Forklifts are always in the yards so they usually will place it in a truck bed or trailer free of charge. Old Dominion is very competitive price wise, and can do logistics for you if they are not LTL warehousing in your direct area!

Have you tried Cross Country Courier in Bismarck? I've found them to be pretty reasonable and have connections to couriers around the country.

Fedex also has a Freight department. I used them when I bought two new TCI 700r4 tranny's from a guy in Louisiana. He threw them in long rubber tubs you can buy at walmart and from Slidell to Ohio cost me under $250.
With a big block...I'd imagine your best bet is to strap it to a pallet and call a freight company. The Fedex freight is a completely different from the regular stuff. Also try DHL, and any local truck freight couriers

I paid $250 to have my LS1 and T56 shipped to the freight dock and I went to go pick it up in person. Check to see if this is an option in your area. It's cheaper to pick it up at the dock.
