All Choked Up
Is there a simple "rule of thumb" to setting an electric choke? I have a 1984 Silverado Short, stock 305 with a Q-jet. Sometimes when I crank up it seems to idle high. This occurs even in th 90 degree temps we've had lately. If I goose the throttle, it will correct sometimes. Other times I can do 15 mph without hittin' the gas! Sorry for the long post, but any help would be appreciated.

Have you checked the fast idle cam screw on the right side of the carb? This determines how far the throttle is held open when the engine is cold started. Even if the ambient temperarture is warm the engine will still hold the throttle open like you are describing. Another thing to check is if the choke blade is moving freely within the housing. If it is binding you can loosen the two screws and adjust its position. I'm sure you will get other advice, these are just my thoughts.

woodyjim. That was not a long post and you do not need to be sorry. I can tell you have not been on here long enough to know what a long post is. Trust me. Yours was short. TrainC5115 gave you some good advice. You might get more. Wish I could help you but I just do now know. Mine does the same sometimes. See, my post has already surprassed yours in length. So did TraomC5115's post.

Thanks for the advice TrainD5115, I'm not real comfortable with making adjustments on a carb. but having someone tell me exactly what to look at is really helpful. I'll check it out and let you know! And thanks to you 86swb for the kind words. You're right,of course, I haven't been on here very long but I am learning! I just hate to seem like I'm going on and on and on and.... oh well. Thanks again guys!

If it's an intermittent problem you might try spraying some carb cleaner on and around the choke linkage to clean off any greasy deposits that could be interfering with smooth operation.

HELLO,,,i'm not gonna be much help on carbs but just wanted to say don't be afraid to make a small adjustment if someone can tell you which screw etc. to try..just dont make BIG adjustment's,on a carb your talking about maybe a 1/4 turn of screwdriver,,just either mark the screw head,or watch your screw driver/wrench or whatever you may be using,,SMALL adjustment,,if it don't work just go back to where you started...(now this is gettin to be a long post with not much advice) lolol...
