Clear Plastic Seat Covers
How retro can you get? I want a set of these...I know they stick you like duct tape on a hot day but there are not many of those in Seattle! They do a great job of protecting the original cloth seat covers but still allow you to see the material. I have not seen them for years...anyone know where you can get them?

The last set of those I saw, was on a 64 Chevy Impala, back in 1964!! I don't know if they are still made or not. That is a good idea though......

I dont think you can get them anymore. Heres the company that used to make them. Found article on them that two brothers started making them in a garage and turned it into million dollar a year business before expanding into other products. John

I found the plastic on line and JCWhitney still carries some. Sounds bad but it protects that $1000+ seat restoration.

My dad always said about those,"why put a seat cover on your new vehicle so the guy that buys the old thing off of you can have a perfect seat?"LOL
You don`t slip with those traction assist nubs that leave a print on the ol`lady`s thighs.

I put some of those from Fingerhut on a new 61 Pontiac Catalina convertible. Four speed, factory mags and tri-power. Fun car!. The seat covers stick to you real bad and they were hot but kept my seats nice. I lived in Miami then and when you left the top down on a sunny day it almost smelled like bacon frying when you sat down wearing shorts!

I REMEMBER BACK IN 1965 MY UNCLE COMING OVER IN HIS BRAND NEW 65 IMPALA. HE HAD THE CLEAR PLASTIC SEAT COVERS INSTALLED AT THE DEALER. I WAS BORN IN 58 SO THAT MADE ME 7 YEARS OLD. I REMEMBER ASKING HIM " UNCLE BUTCH... WHY ARE THOSE PLASTIC COVERS ON YOUR BRAND NEW APOLSTERY??" HE SAID THAT HE'D TAKE THEM OFF IN A YEAR OR TWO WHEN HE TRADED THAT CAR IN ON A NEW ONE, & THE SEATS WOULD BE LIKE BRAND NEW. THIS SEEMED PRETTY DARN CRAZY TO A 7 YEAR OLD, & SEEMS EVEN CRAZIER NOW THAT I'M 47. IN RETROSPECT... HE DID HAVE FOUR BOYS THAT WERE LITTLE ANIMALS, BUT I THINK I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT A HORSE TRAILOR TO HAUL THE LITTLE BUGGERS IN. JOHN

Its not crazy at all when looked at from a historical perspective. Back in the 60's many first time new car buyers had grown up in the depression 30 years earlier. They probably grew up with next to nothing and anything "new" was a hand-me-down. It was only natural for them to cherish and keep new their newly acquired possession. If not for themselves, for the next person, as they knew all to intimately what it was like to get something that was all used up.
It's a value that has all but been lost in today's throw away society. I think it's a cool you're looking for these

Clear plastic covers
I worked as an auto upholsterer in '64 to '69. Must have installed hundreds of those. We also made our own of smooth clear plastic. They were custom fitted and looked a lot better. Back then original seat covers didn't last like they do now and probably needed to be protected. As I remember, the Fingerhut covers did not fit real well and the plastic was thin and only lasted a year or two.
If you can't get Fingerhut covers, maybe an upholstery shop can make up a custom set for you. I have not seen that bumpy clear plastic lately, but the smooth is still available and actually lasts and looks a lot better, though not as 'retro'. Mar-Ktech

Anybody for a Static Electricity jolt?
Dad put a set on the first new car he bought...a '59 Ford. If you slid across the seat on a dry winter day, you'd see an arc flying off your fingertip when it got close enough to the door handle. And, like said before, on a hot day....expecially on the smooth plastic covers....skin would stick to them and you'd go nowhere.
Last set I saw was on a rerun of That's Raymond....when his mom took the plastic off of the couch and they got to sit on the naked upholstery....with food!! Count me out, but it's a good question.
