More help with crossmember drop?
Hey guys,
I know there has been lots of talk about crossmember drops of late but I have ran into a few minor issues I am trying to figure out a salution to prior to cutting my crossmember. I finally got my 406 sbc and 700r4 bolted up with the stock crossmember in place. Any ways I am running a 7qt oil pan and would like to keep it that way. The problem I am running into is that my oil pan already sits about as low as the crossmember now, so after I take 1.5" out the oil pan will be too low. So what I am curious is what are you guys with 292;s and others with clearance issues doing? I am starting to think the crossmember "notch" may work better for me but then what to do with the engine mounts. Any sort of help will be greatly appricated I know I am not the first person to run into these sorts of issues. Thanks Keith |

Re: More help with crossmember drop?
On my crossmember I welded these in. http://www.nolimit.net/index.asp?Pag...ROD&ProdID=147
Then I am running solid motor mounts. My oil pan is a 7qt Circle track Hamburger pan. It is 7.5" deep. Sits above my frame rails. |

Re: More help with crossmember drop?
A crossmember notch is going to make it worse if you pan is deeper all the way across. The are doing the same thing, only you can use the stock motor mounts with the chop and you can't with the notch. As long as it doesn't hang well below the lower control arm bottoms, you shouldn't have a problem.
The only way to solve the issue of the oil pan being too low is the raise the motor like fastbagged did. You can do this on either method.

Re: More help with crossmember drop?
I did an oil change in the middle of the street with my pan hanging too low. Don't risk it... either go with a shallower pan or don't do the crossmember notch.

Re: More help with crossmember drop?
Thanks for all the help guys!
I just got a new oil pan (well hell rebuilt the entire engine) so now I am in a toss up. New engine towers or new oil pan. Can I use my stock egnine mounts or do I need special ones for my 460 sbc? Thanks Keith |
