Drum brake problems

Well, I replaced the shoes and drums on my brakes yesterday. Things went well on the driver side. Passenger side gave me fits and now it is continuing to do so. It was a total PITA to get the drum back on to fit over the shoes, but finally I got it. Well, I test drove it and it's draggin a$$ real bad on the passenger side. Heated up the drum so much I could cook on it. (literally)
This morning I checked the emergency brake cable and it is stuck. Prolly was before since this side was worn so badly. Is this the root of my problem??? It's on jackstands right now and I can barely spin the wheel backwards, but forwards it is completely stuck. Any ideas??

Re: Drum brake problems

I would take it apart and clean everything good then on re-assymbly put some anti seize on the backing plate where the shoes ride against it.And re adjust brakes should be good to go then.

I put some white lithium grease on the backing plate on all the tabs where the shoes ride. I just took the drum off again. (came off easily this time) and I guess I'll try to disconnect the parking brake and go from there. Gonna have to order a new cable for sure. Where should I disconnect the cable at if it's frozen up? It's frozen from insided the housing that goes up to the trailing arm.

Re: Drum brake problems

Well, it was the e-brake. It was completely seized up in there. I had to cut the cable or it was gonna rub the axle from the backside and I didn't want to run the risk of it catching on something and detonating my rear brake. Guess I'll order one up. The e-brake hasn't worked since I got the truck so I'm not missing anything temporarily even though it's kinda hack right now, at least the truck is functional again. Nice to at least know that I'm learning and moving forward with my mechanical abilities. I've never replaced drum brakes before so that's kinda cool. I'm really having a fun time with this truck doing things myself even if some things are frustrating. It's all about learning.
