new (old) truck

I posted this awhile ago under 1970 heavy chevy.....figured it would be just as easy to start a new thread.

This is my new 3/4t 4x4.....no options farm truck....it used to be olive green (as seen from the interior pics) not sure what color she will be in the near future. Immediate plans are to drive it, and use it as a truck as often as possible......fyi.....filled up the tank on my journey from ohio to michigan, averaged 14mpg on the highway on the way home......and thats with no locking hubs!!

Re: new (old) truck

Great new truck, congrats!

Why no locking hubs...

Interior color looks darker than med olive green but maybe it's just the pic.

Very cool truck, nice find.

It would look sweet with some old school slotted mags w/33's on it...

Re: new (old) truck

I was toying with the idea of daily driver tires, and off road type tires....maybe slotted wheels would be the way to go, I sent you a PM VT, and Never heard back.....whats the asking price on those?

The 250/3 on the tree/lwb is purely because it was a farm truck (from what I can gather anyway) the original buyer bought this truck to work, with no options what so ever....the radio was an add on....one of the PO's hacked a hole in the cowl to put it in....other than the paint, bumper, and interior vinyl trim.....the ONLY option is a heavy duty clutch

FYI....i have big plans for this truck, a high output 250 will likely find its way under the hood.....keeping it original with a flare for making it an original!

That's some awesome mileage. When you shoot some pics next, can you shoot a couple showing where the 6 cylinder engine crossmember is mounted to the frame. That's a great looking truck.

Re: new (old) truck

I see your dashpad, door panels, and steering column appear to be black, What color are the sun visors ? and can you tell if the black parts are original ? I have the same green on my 70, but it is all green inside, I was thinking of adding some black like you have for some contrast and yours seems to look pretty good, just wondering if that may be an original color scheme inside ?

Re: new (old) truck

The interior shots are fairly represenative of the actual color (maybe a touch lighter in person).
Yukon, I will be taking pics tonight of the transfer case, and transmission, while I am underthere, I will take a bunch of pics of the engine cross member, just underneath, or the top too?

green machine, the visors are black, and I believe them to be original, as the seat has been repaired on the drivers side, but the pass. side is original, and still black, I think the black accents work nicely, if you need any specific pics, send me a PM, will be happy to help.

3 on the tree 4x4 with no locking hubs is rare? What are the odds I would actually end up with a plain jane that actually ended up being something different!

p.s. if you think the 14mpg highway is good, I was pretty shocked at my 12mpg around town, keep in mind, this includes 20 mins. of warm up time every morning before I go to work and driving everywhere with fully locked hubs!

Re: new (old) truck

That is the first 4x4 I've seen that did not list "Front Locking Hubs" on the option sheet. The Model number looks to be KS so that jibes with the 4x4 I6 combo.

I6 4x4's are way better than V8 trucks and the 3 speed on the column gives better gearing than a 4 speed granny low IMO.

One piece of advice, the 1970 3/4 ton 4x4 front drums are a 1 year only item and hard to get parts for. It's the only year of the open knuckle drum combo.

Your truck should have locking hubs (and drums) if the D44 FE is original

Re: new (old) truck

I tried to read your glove box door and I think it says black vinyl trim, which must have been an option that included the black door panels and such, else maybe would have been all green ? and the paint says dark olive - is the paint number 506? -

Sorry to ask so many questions, but are the vent windows and the rubber on each side of the window chrome ? and is the strip above the door panel chrome ?
Thanks

Re: new (old) truck

Green, there are never too many questions to be asked.....I am living proof of that
The trim above the door panels is a painted silver, not an actual chrome strip, I don't believe the vent windows had any chrome on them as you can see from the pic, there is no exterior chrome on the truck either, it's possible that it was also painted silver at one point, but I will have to double check on that, I will be sure to take some pics and email them to you if you would like, just let me know what you specifically want pics of.

With respect to the paint code, I will have to go out to the truck and check that, the pic is a little too blurry for me to read (late night pic from when I first got the truck home).

To clarify on the black vinyl trim, the seat, the visors, dashpad and the arm rests are all trimmed in black vinyl/plastic, the door panels themselves are painted black, as is the steering column.

Re: new (old) truck

Can you post a pic of your "non-locking hubs". I have never seen one with out locking hubs listed either??

I have always woundered if they were optional or not, because they are usually listed on the "option" sticker. I have never seen anything "standard" listed on an option sheet. Just a little more trivia!!!

Re: new (old) truck

very cool! that's the second 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 6cyl/3spd that i've seen. i saw one that was on ebay a long time ago, it was a medium olive 69 or 70 3/4 ton with a 6cyl and 3 speed, not sure what it went for though.

i'd repaint it the original color. my truck is the same green and it's an awesome color.

Re: new (old) truck

I stopped and looked at a 68 or 67 longbed 4x4 2 weeks ago with a 6 and 3 on the tree, but converted to floor shift. It was a 1/2 ton model. Yours looks nice, and I have to say I was intrigued by the 6 cyl 4x4 combo. Wish I had my brain with me that day to look closer to determine if it was a 292 or 250.

I'll send you a pm right now with the details.

The locking hub thing needs to be clarified though.

Re: new (old) truck

What part of ohio were you in? I swear I saw an orange LWB 4X4 on the freeway here in columbus. I had a seriouse lad of scrap and the truck was a little too squirley to look over my shoulder and get a better look at the truck though. (weighed in with just over 4800 pounds of scrap in the bed)
Your MPG is rather impressive, esp if you were doing normal freeway speeds. I'm thinking standard gearing should be 4.57 too, which would wrap that inline out pretty good at those speeds.

Re: new (old) truck

Lock out hubs were an option. This truck does not have that option,it`s that simple.I had a Blazer that was a 3spd and no L/Os.The cap was a smooth convex piece that popped on like a 2wd dust cap.Mine was a`71.
That`s the Dark Olive Poly. That`s what it says on the sticker, too.
The sticker also says Black vinyl.Not an option,but a spec.Just like the paint color,4wd/2wd,10/20/30 series,wheelbase,bed-type,or 250-I6/307-V8.

That emblem should say "4 Wheel Drive". Used in 69/70, possibly 68 too, discontinued in 71.

Re: new (old) truck

yes, the emblem says 4 wheel drive...I love it!
the color is mediium olive, paint code 506 green machine.
longhorn man, on sunday the 23rd, I was driving up from newark ohio, I probably passed right through your neck of the woods around 4pm or so on my way home.....if it was a 1970 orange 4x4 humming along at 75mph on the highway.....odds are good it was me (can't imagine there are many of those kicking around these days).
with respect to the gearing, not sure....have to jack her up, and count the spins of the axle....
lastly, the paint will be returned to med. olive green, thinking about painting the roof and cowl black though.....not sure...have to think on that one for a bit.

everyone waiting for pics, I have them, took pics of the axle, hubs, engine cross member, and all.....left my memory stick at home....monday morning...I promise!
thanks for all the kind words.....been getting some flack about buying an 'old' truck.....I just laugh and say I am getting just shy of the mpg of the new trucks....without overdrive......and the hefty monthly payment
