"High Torque" 283

Just something I thought was interesting. I wonder if it's different from a regular 283 other than the sticker on the valve cover.

Is that a little one barrell carb on there? lol.

Re: "High Torque" 283

Chevrolet had two versions of most engines the Turbo-Fire and the High Torque (or "wheeze bag" if you prefer...LOL). The Turbo-Fire had more hp and more torque than the High Torque...which was really just another name for low performance or economy.

In the 6-cylinder line they called them the High Torque and Turbo-Thrift but the performance specs were identical despite the fact that the HT had a 2 barrel carb and the TT had a one-barrel. Marketing...LOL!

Re: "High Torque" 283

Like said already, it's a 2-barrel, specifically a Rochester 2GC. Ran one for several years on my '65 C-10. It's a good carburetor, but if you add a couple more on top of an Edelbrock C3BX intake, it will look sweeeeeet!!

My 307 has a rochester 2bbl and I used to get 12mpg.

I replaced the hoses and tuned her up (still stock) and got 13mpg.

Then I added a PCV line filter and got it up to 14mpg.

Still working on it, more things to try.... My goal is 20. yeah right!

Hey chevy283, is that your 283 in your profile? If so, could you post a couple pics if you got any? It looks pretty nice.

Re: "High Torque" 283

Yeah, that is pretty darn sweet. What kind of intake do you got on it? And what was wrong with the headers that you took them off?

Always tough.

The ram's horns on my 283 mounted an alt bracket with an L adapter to the intake manifold bolts.

Special-K, Like my professors always said...sometimes you have to repeat yourself. Maybe that was just for my benefit...LOL!

chevy283, Sweeeeet looking engine! My first rebuild, as a youngster, was a 283...love those mouse motors! Great idea on the silver valve covers...mind if I copy that?
