electric fuel pump and a carb

The engine I bought was apparently originally built to be 'happy' in the high RPM's and the PO didn't want to run the motor with the original mechanical fuel pump, so he bought an electric pump.....if I use it for the install, do I need to run a return line to the tank like a fuel injected setup?

Also, can anyone tell me how to hook up an electric fuel pump? I know I need a paper filter before the pump, and a screened filter after it (right before the carb I am told is the best location), but other than that, I need direction, I know nothing about electrical.....how do I put juice to this bad boy?
Thanks

Re: electric fuel pump and a carb

depends on the pump you are using it may or may not need a return line would have to know more about it to give you any info if you dont know the specs you may be able to get the info from the manufacturer if it puts out low pressure under 10 psi then you shouldnt need a return line.
I would just stick a mechanical pump on it if possible and not even bother with installing an electric pump.

you shouldn't need a return line but i would highly recomend a pressure regulator//most applications you're alot better off with a standard mech fuel pump

Re: electric fuel pump and a carb

I got a Holley blue pump with a filter before the pump, mounted under the cab. Then my Holley regulator is mounted right beside my carb( duel feed) and a gauge right beside. Run a ignition "on" wire to the pump and ground it. On when you turn the key and off is off. Its not a daily driver but is very reliable. I can post some pics if ya want.

Pics would be helpful.....you don't need a fuse for the pump at all?

Re: electric fuel pump and a carb

Here you go. Yes you should fuse it...prob a 20-30A. as you can see I mounted mine right under the tank with the filter before the pump. They sell the filter at NAPA or any parts store. Its made by Fram but a lot of other companies sell it under their name, and it takes a fram filter so its easy to find. Also I used a brass fitting to link the two units together before I mounted them. Then I used braided lines and fittings from Russell to plumb the rest. I am thinking about swapping out the Holley regulator for a Areomotive one, I think its a better regulator.

Re: electric fuel pump and a carb

I'd just run a mechanical, I run a Victor series with a Moroso hollow rod and spin it to 6500rpm all the time had it for years now works great, puts out 130gph at 14psi, Edelbrock rates it good for 900hp. On my nitrous side I run a Holley blue electric, with a dead end system but it only stay's on for 20 sec at a time, enough to stage run the 1/4 and then off. If you want to run a electric on the street and have a reliable system, go for a flow through pump with a return style reg. The fuel will cool the armature of the pump as it runs, and the return style reg will keep the amps down and be easier on the pump. Run a pre-filter before the pump and then a finer one after the reg of just before. Run a size larger line on the suction side, sizer depends on HP and length of line.

Re: electric fuel pump and a carb

Your average automotive electric pump should put out between 4-5 lbs pressure, which you don`t need a regulator or return line....Hi Per pumps put out anywhere from 7- 15 lbs pressure....which should be regulated to aprox 6 1/2 lbs ,depending on the CFM and CID of motor....electric pumps are pusher pumps..IE place as close to the fuel tank as possible (but NOT in the cab if used on a 72 down truck)...Ideal set up is to have a wire run from a oil pressure guage, with a push button over ride.In case of an accident motor stops...pump stops. And allways as with ANY electrical assesory ALLWAYS put the proper amp fuse in line as close to the power sourse as possible...Sid

Re: electric fuel pump and a carb

If you run an electric pump there should be an oil pressure switch to shut off the pump when the engine stops.
It's a safety thing, so in a crash the pump will stop if the engine does and not keep pumping fuel all over you...
