Pulling my hair out...about to give up

I've been trying to get my dash lights and my fuel gauge to work for about a month now. I'm at my wits end. Like an idiot I didn't put in all of the black twist in's that are on the back of the dash for lights. red71cheyenne told me that if I put them in it would complete the circuit-nope. Didn't help, don't know what else to do besides take it to a shop.

Also since I've been messing with this the past week. All of a sudden my battery won't stay charged. I jumped the truck off yesterday and let it run probably 10 minutes. Cut it off and tried to crank it a few minutes later and it barely turns over and does the great click click.

Do you have a good ground wire on the metal part of your dash?

Re: Pulling my hair out...about to give up

Yes I checked that. It's the black wire with that U-Clip on it.

I just let if run for 30 minutes and cut it off and it wouldn't start back up. So I guess I'll have to check the battery and alt.

Also to add to my misery when I hit the brakes my stereo reception gets REALLY crappy.

What did you do to your truck right before they quit? New tunes, steering wheel, gage faces? Anything that may help tell you where the problem started?

Sounds like you have a bad ground in all hoesty.
Does the dash light on the heater panel work?

Also sounds like a no charge or dead battery as far as not starting.

Yellow 69 each light on the dash works sepertaly, they are not in series. As for starting check the alt. by removing the battery terminals after the truck is running. If it stays running it OK the battery is junk. Hope this gets you going in the rite direction.

Or it could mean the alt is putting out just a coupl eamps...that's all it takes to run the engine at idle.
If you must test this way (it isn't good for the alt) then turn on all accessories and then unplug the battery.

Re: Pulling my hair out...about to give up

Does this back side of the dash board have a printed circut like sheet ? Am not up on this electric much . But could that be something to do with the problem? If so I have one of these I will not be using. Larry

Sorry Yellow69, I thought the lamps were series, thought that would cure that part of it for you. Did you get to check the pink wire on the plug we were talking about the other night? Also, disconnecting the battery with it running can cause the diodes in the alternator to burn up. Jeff.

Re: Pulling my hair out...about to give up

Are the aftermerkt guages working? How do you have them hooked up? Are they on the same ground curcuit as the clip on dash wire? If the dash lights and guage lights are on seperate grounds try to make them the same ground(same source not same wire) I usally run a wire from the back of the dash pannel to the dash as an extra precaution... Just some food for thought..
