Tilt wheel help

I have a 71 C10, and I am pondering putting in a tilt wheel with column shift.
I was hoping that someone could help with ideas of which vehicles and years would be best, to look for a column. I would love to go with an Ididit column, but I am trying for a lot cheaper. So any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Most people use one from a 70s 80s chevy van. Thats where mine came from. I can't remember what years, but someone here will chime in I'm sure. They're WAY cheaper than an ididit or flaming river.

A little closer comment. Very early 70's to most 82 Chev/GMC vans. The key is the clue. The ignition switch is located on the dash through most of 82 in the vans. 73 and up P/Us have the key on the column whitch becomes a pain.

The Van tilt usually needs to have the N/S switch moved(see FAQs) and a wiring adaptor(still available at GM I believe). Very easy to install. Cost for the van column varies from $30 at a junk yard to $150 on the board depending on condition.

72 - 81 is the van years. I've seen one '82 with the old style, but no one can explain that one.
The older vans would have the correct red 4 way flasher knob... but have a real long shifter. (same as your non-tilt truck shifter) The old ones would also have the correct horse shoe harness for the turn signal.
The later ones would have the shorter shifter arm, the flat turn signal plug, and the later 4 way knob (push the center to turn on, pull on a collar to turn them off)
This is a minimal fuss instalation. Any other factory column will be a total PITA to install with additional wireing and switches and stuff, not to mention the cutting of the dash to make it physicly fit.

anyone know where to get part for them column I need a a turn singnal arm...mine has a cruz button in it and I need the conector to convert the wiring does anyone have the part # so I can hit the gm dealer or someplace else I can get it??

the column I have has the push button E flasher button but I'm not sure what year it is and we all knw what its like to talk to a dealer parts guy?? :duh:

since its a quick mod and its winter time I think I could suffer thought it just want to have all the parts together???

Brotherstrucks.com has remanufactured tilt columns for 500 bucks. Not cheap but better than IDIDIT.
