Re: bbc headers?

I have Hookers on my 71 GMC. Two sugestions invest in a good set of locking header bolts and have you headers jet hot coated, it's well worth the cost

What exactly does the coaating do for you besides prevent rust?

I'm thiinkin we should bang our heads together and make a list (maybe a spreadsheet format?) of the best headers for each engine/body combo as far as general fit, spark plug access, ground clearance, sound, leaks, price, etc, etc. What say yousguys?

Re: bbc headers?

Are you looking for "shorty style" headers? I tried the Chevelle shortys from Jegs and they didn't fit my 72 with BBC. I went to a long tube header from Hedman. They fit pretty good but are not exactly the tube size I wanted. I tried Hooker Super Comps first and there was no way they would fit. They hit the oilpan and the frame. Then I went to Hooker Comps after the Jegs guy said he knew for a fact they would fit. Nope. Here's a couple pics of the Headmans on my truck. The collectors are kinda low but my truck is pretty low compared to most.

Re: bbc headers?

My Hooker comps fit great.

The coating prevents rust, and realy helps keep under hood temps down.

It looks nice too

Re: bbc headers?

I used Hedman shorties for a chevelle, and they worked great for me. I did have to trim the passenger frame rail a little, but no big deal.

Here is the right up --> LINK

Re: bbc headers?

The part # for mine is 500-69820. They seem to be a good quality header so far. The tube size is 1 7/8 compared to the 2 1/4 I wanted. I'm using a mini starter so there is plenty of clearance. The flanges are super thick. I had to get longer ARP bolts. These use a "Ball and socket" collector and are supposed to be leakfree. I'll have to see over time. This is my 1st time to use Headmans.

Cool Re: bbc headers?

I purchased Thorley Tri-Y's and will be installing them on my truck
Will post those when mounted...
I like the mini starter idea; that will greatly help that area!

Here are the headman headders I installed this weekend.. The fit is nice and I really have no complaints of them they do hang below the frame but for now I will live with em that way... Mine are not coated but for the $$ I paid for em I got a pretty good deal.. Heres a few pics...

Re: bbc headers?

I'm poor so i bought the cheapie flow-tech ones from kragen- they work pretty good- about 4 years after i bought em, one of the pipes cracked at the collector- but i just rewelded it with no problems- sound really good and seem to flow well (was a world of difference between them and the cast ones). I highly recommend aluminum collector gaskets or you will replace gaskets every month or two...

Re: bbc headers?

i bought the dynomax ceramic coated headers for thr big block and they fit great and seal well except for the collectors, i ended up getting the aluminum gaskets and they worked great no more problems at all. just remember to run the engine a few times and cool and tighten the header bolts in between and they shouldn't leak.

Re: bbc headers?

I used the Hooker comps for a 67-68 chevy truck. The ports matched the semi square port of the "oval port" heads. The headmans have a round port which does not match up well and causes leaks. The ball and socket thing sucks as well. The bolts continuously loosen and they leak. nylocks do not work because they melt. I guess if you dent the nut they may not back out. I like the Hookers way better than the Headmans (but I have both!)

I'm not sure how the coating will hold up. It's my 1st set of Headmans and they have only been on there a couple weeks. Hopefully they will last as long as the Hooker headers I usually use. I bought the ARP bolts to use with them.

Re: bbc headers?

I have Hooker Super Comps. Bought them 10 years ago and got tired of painting them black. So I took them out and had them coated. Didn't have to lift the engine but the did have to come out the bottom. Coating was worth every penny.
