Disc Brake question

I was tearing apart the 71 front crossmember I bought and both rotors have the same groove on both sides. I thought maybe a po sucked with brakes, but when I was cruising ebay I saw the same thing on other discs. Why is that groove there

Re: Disc Brake question

mine had it too. same groove on both sides of both rotors. there must be something on the brake pads that grind before anything else. the new rotors i got were smoothe.

If you wear the pads down far enough the rivets that hold them to the backing plate with start to grind down on the rotor.

Re: Disc Brake question

Original 71-72 rotors had a factory groove in them according to my GM parts guy. He told me that the first time he saw my truck, "Your truck still has OEM original front rotors, you can tell by the groove"

Starting in 73, no groove, and all aftermarket replacements are without groove too.

Re: Disc Brake question

Thanks....now I wonder why they put it there? Also with this groove, can they be cut? They don't look too bad, and with replacements at about $70 a piece I might try to reuse mine.

I got mine from Autozone about 2 years ago. Paid 32 bucks each for them. The current price is about 35 bucks each. Not sure how "good" they are, but They've been on the truck for 2 years and 6,000 miles, no vibrations or wear problems with them. Might be a cheaper alternative if your's cant be "turned."

Re: Disc Brake question

My 71 malibu has a groove on the factory rotors. A futile attempt at adding surface area in my estimation.

Re: Disc Brake question

I guess I have to go back to Advance and flip a little. They told me the only ones they had were $70.....I didn't check online because I don't need them quite yet. I stay away from AZ as much as possible....the manager lady smells REAL bad
