700r4 swap and driveshaft ?

hey guys, I'm getting a 700r4 out of a 99 tahoe with 38k miles on it. My question is, will this tranny work in my 72 and if I found a drive shaft out of a long bed 90's model with a 700r4 could I use it instead of having to get my drive shaft shortened? Just wondering. thanks for any advice.

Okay, number one the trans in the 99 is a 4l60e not a 700r4. You don't want it in your 72. Number two, the 72 uses a 2 piece shaft and the early 90's is a 1 piece. Start over. The trans you want would be out of 85 - 92 model.

Re: 700r4 swap and driveshaft ?

thanks,so the 4l60e wouldn't work at all? or could it be made to work and nobody has done it yet.Just wondering cause I could get a really good deal on this tranny and would hate to pass it up.
now about the one piece drive shaft, i looked at one at the salvage yard yesterday and it was a two piece. The only reason I brought it up was because if it was connected to a 700r4 and was a long bed would it fit, be to long, or would it even bolt up at all? thoughts to ponder.

find you a good 1 piece drive shaft ,have it shortened ,less trouble in the end!

Best way to tell on the drive shaft is to measure. The 4L60E will work, but by the time you get an aftermarket controller for it it won't be such a good deal anymore.

Re: 700r4 swap and driveshaft ?

Larry has it right. It is a computer controlled tranny, it takes all it's input from the computer. The controller you'd need would cost more than you want to spend on the whole set up. You could do a gear vendors for that much and be 10 times stronger.
If you want an easy swap, get a TH200 4R. It will physicly bolt in where a TH350 was, all you need to do is move the crossmember to the TH400 spot, then get the kits needed for the TV cable and the lock up controll. Even a stock TH350 drive shaft will fit no problem.

I thought about the 200r4 but I plan on towing a boat one day and I use the truck for hauling firewood, which is what I did today and damn I beat.

the 700 isn't much more of a tranny than the 200, and in some ways, the 700 is weaker.
Either one in stock form is OK for once in a while towing and hauling.
