Rear discs a rare factory option? wtf?
Check out this article at Fourwheeler.com. Someone is obviously misinformed.

The only thing I ever heard GM putting discs on were Corvettes and super rare Camaro Z-28's that were to be used for SCCA Trans Am racing. Then again, I found a 74 Imperial with Rear discs.

never believe everything ya read in a magazine article. many times the owner will fill the reporter's head full of sh!t and the reporter does'nt really know any better. i agree with low69cst, ......trans ams, camaros, and vettes.

I also read today that there really is no fighting going on in the middle east, it's all a massive right wing conspiracy done with smoke and mirrors, Sharon and Arafat are really old drinking buddies, and Micheal Jackson is dating Brittany Spears, and this 450 lb guy fell off a 13th floor balcony and bounced a little but walked away unscathed...............don't believe everything you read. I have yet to see any information that would even mention factory discs all the way around one of our trucks. And with all the massive knowledge and connections we have on this board (5,000 users and counting) if there had been, someone would have said something about it before now. I'm hoping he bought it from a guy who told him that and he doesn't know any better, if he knows its not factory , he is making himself look like an idiot.............JB

I've never seen it before, I doubt it highly. But I did for the first time see a factory SWB 72 4x4 with factory trailing arms. It was a Baja package I'm told. Weird. I did a double take on it.

Uh yah, 67-72 just barely got front discs and they are talking about rear discs? Which vehicles had rear discs back then, did GM have any with them? I guess that side marker fuel filler is a SUPER rare option too. Anyone see the pic of the underbed gas tank? Isnt the exhaust running kinda close to the tank?

Actually no BS my friend had a 66 camaro, it was a 67 basically,identically but was registered as a 66' because thats when they made them and it was in the first 100 or something of the line, and it had 1966 on the title ,same as the 67 but titled as a 66' and called a 66' except when he were to order parts...

Are you sure he didn't just get a 67 model in late '66? If I am wrong I stand corrected, but I would have to see some facts on them. Website explaining this maybe????..........JB

Tennman did a simular but different thing. In the pics i remember looking at while at work, the truck in question looked like the factory inner bed pannel was still there in tack. Tennman cut his away and made more room. I remember seeing a truck at a Tennessee show years and years ago with this simular trick done. We aren't the first to think these up. I heard that a camaro sway bar fit these trucks, but never saw one until I decided to try it.
About the trailing arm 4x4......4x4's bring much more money than 2wd's and in this part of the country an original short 4x4 truck is on the same list as 63 split window vettes. I'm not saying that its impossible, but for me to really blieve these is a genuine optional equipment from GM, i'd have to go over that frame with a fine tooth comb. It sounds more like a guy had a 2wd truck and decided he wanted a 4x4. About the rear discs, maybe the guy told the reporter its a stock original late model axle, but not original to the truck. New trucks are 6 lugs and have disc brakes.

okay, the only rear discs available up to 72 was on the vette. and it was a real expensive item too. can you imagine what adding rear discs to a chevy truck would have done to the price back then, AND would have done to chevy trucks market share. let us remember, they were'nt slammin, shavin, flamin, and so forth back then..........they were for WORK. the guy that wrote that article should have known better if he has any knowledge of autmotive history. if he does'nt, he should get out of the journalism business.

Actually there were some 68-71? Camaro's and Firebirds with disc brake option for the rear. I think they came with a Z-11 package. I have seen several Camaro's with the option. I am not sure about the Z-11 being a package though.
I almost bought a 50 Chevy truck with a disc rear out of a 68 Firebird. But my dumbass buddy messed up the deal by telling the guy the truck was junk. It was, but i had the rear sold for more than 2 times the price of the truck. But he didnt want to sell by the time i left. Someone dig out the option codes on the Camaro's would ya?

As far as I know, 68 corvettes up, Independents rear suspension cars had disc brakes. I haven't seen too many late 60's corvettes, but i've seen thousands of mid 70's and up. I've never seen a 68-82 style vette without discs brakes. Back in these years it wasn't that adding rear discs were expensive, just nobody cared. Drums had so many interchangable parts that it was easy to put the same stuff on all the cars. change shoes and drums for each application, like bigger stuff for trucks and chevelles, smaller for little cars. People just cared about taking off fast. Think of all the mopars that had Hemi's and 440's that had 4 wheel drum brakes. Scary.
I don't know if the camaro disc brake was part of the Z-11, but it was an option for road race cars. Yes they are very very high priced items because so many of them go torn up during racing. Just a few survived.

Disc brakes on the rear were standard on corvettes from 65 up. The trans am equipment talked about for camaros and firebirds, I believe was over the counter stuff you had to install yourself. I know for a fact the headers and crossram manifold were. You could order them with the car but they came in the trunk.

Duane kept most of the vintage Chevy’s interior stock. The seat was recovered in cloth and a carpet set was thrown in to make the cab more livable. The truck came with a factory gauge cluster to which a Sun tachometer was added. A Grant steering wheel replaced the original plastic wheel for a better feel, and Pioneer tunes keep the ears happy.
Help me out here... "most of the vintage Chevy's interior {is} stock" Cloth seat, carpet, poofy dash cover, Grant steering wheel, Sun tach, and Pioneer deck. What, pray tell was NOT changed out? Kudos to the owner for hard work and making what seems to be a nice truck, but shame shame shame to whoever is trying to blow smoke up our patooteys with the text in this article. Kenneth

the moral of the story is, that if you modify it, just say you did, if it's your idea...great, if you got it from somewhere else, take the idea and run with it.....don't call it your own,............and if you say it's stock you better know your stuff, don't let a pack of hungry chevy know it all truck hounds like us get a hold of the story. we'll eat ya alive.

I have seen the one an only documented 67-69 Z-28 Camaro Convertable. Yes everyone knows that there were not suppose to be any Convertable Z-28's made. But that does not take in account the special 1967 one made for a top GM Exectuive's daughter. I guess anything is possible, but I kind of doubt the rear disc brakes being original on that truck.
Fine69, the Z-11 option was the designation for the 69 camaro pace car. It had nothing to do with disc brakes. Im not sure of the code for disc brakes for the camaro, but I think it is like jl-8????
