5 speed/OD conversion for 4wd

picked up a 69 gmc 4wd with 4 speed manual.was wondering if anyone knows of a 5 speed with overdrive conversion or kit that would work with these trucks. i know of the richmond gears 5 speed forcars, not sure for the trucks with 4wd. i also know of the nv4500 from newer trucks, but thats a bit pricey since ill be just selling truck once its finished. any help would be appreciated..thx paul

Re: 5 speed/OD conversion for 4wd

Pretty much anything is going to involve an adapter, and probably changing driveshaft lengths. I know there is an adapter for the NV4500 to the NP205 from Advanced Adapters.

I've toyed with the idea of using a newer 5-speed/tcase and using a front axle from a Ford, since it has the pumpkin on the driver's side, but usually I decide I don't want to do that.

Re: 5 speed/OD conversion for 4wd

what he said....you will need an adaptor......there is no CHEAP way to do it....it can be done relatively inexpensively....but not completely with parts from a pick and pull.....honestly the cheapest of the cheap ways might be to do a body swap onto a late model as anything else (at least that I have come across) will either involve adaptors and an NV4500 or replacing multiple parts of the drivetrain.....If I am wrong...PLEASE let me know....as I would like to do a similar swap.

An aux. overdrive might be the easiest method....but to cut down on the adaptors you will need a divorced unit like Vtblazer has....and he still have to have a $300 shorty slip yoke fabbed up.

Gear Vendor if it is a long bed. No OD in 4x4 though.

I'm planning on using an 05 auto and the transfer case, I wanted to do the ford front diff thing....why wouldn't you want to do it? are there some complications i'm not thinking of?

Just use a divorced NP-205 behind any 2WD trans you want.

Primarily, I don't want to get rid of my NP205. Well, and I'd hate to have to tell someone that I had a *cough* Ford axle in my Chevy. Not that I have anything against Fords...

Re: 5 speed/OD conversion for 4wd

Make sure you know which transfer case you have - it likely has a Rockwell T221 and finding an adapter for it that would work with a 5 speed is probably gonna require a custom adapter - that will be dang expensive.

The 81 and later manual trans 208 case will bolt directly to an NV4500. This is what I did on my conversion from an SM465
