Was this a crossmember?
I was under the truck and I noticed what looks like the remnants of a crossmember. Heres a pic. Does anyone know what this is for?
Thanks

Re: Was this a crossmember?
Wan't really across member, but tranny mounts... your truck used to have a manual shift in it, and that's where the mounts were. Had one on either side.

Yup. Crossmember for M/T. Someone cut it out and added auto.

Re: Was this a crossmember?
If the truck has a 3 speed manual then it was cut out rather than drill the rivits and removed.

Re: Was this a crossmember?
Have fun - a tip from someone who recently had to do this on his ride -
When you have that chunk of xmember left, easiest thing to do is take a sawzall, sawzall the head off flush to the frame, then use a tool to pry up the remnant of metal (in taking off the head, the rivet will peel right up). This beats the hell out of wasting a good drill bit or die grinding the crap outta the thing. If you can't get the head down close to the frame, consider grinding the remnants. I did this - it's better/easier than using an air hammer. I tried drilling, grinding and chiselling for about 4 hours and got 3 rivets out... then got pissed, broke out the sawzall and in 15 minutes I had the other 5 rivets out.

Re: Was this a crossmember?
I also used A 4" grinder to take the heads of the rivets down flush. Then used A pry bar. Went well.

Seriously - nobody mentioned earplugs with the pneumatic hammers and whatnot. Very important stuff.

Re: Was this a crossmember?
i take a cut off wheel and cut grooves in the heads. then take an air hammer to what's left of the head. had to do that when i converted my truck from a straight 6 to a 350 hooked a log chain from the crossmemeber to the tractor and pulled. then welded it into place.
