Well, slowly but surely, I am replacing my old broke motor (see pic) with a reman. I bought. I really don't have the money right now for a full resto so I am just trying to clean up a few things for my new(rebuilt) motor install. Once I get the motor painted and asembled, it will be the cleaned part of the whole truck. I figure I'll just do a piece at a time.

Anyway since I have the engine out I decided to clean up the oil and muddy mess left behind by the old motor. I can't really get to all areas with out totaly disassembling the front in so I am doing what I can for now. Should I repaint it or put some sort of coating? What about the areas I can't get the grease out? One of many dilemas.

What I am doing is removing and painting the fender wells. I also decided to rattle can the outside of the truck with a Krylon satin paint. I am using it insted of primer. Seems to work ok and it's not glossy at all.

Oh also check out the last pic. It's my tranny with a pretective shield of mud and dirt. Going to clean that up and replace the filter.

Yeah that bearing cuased a whole mess of trouble. My engine crapped out whil I was on the highway. It broke one of the brass keepers on the top of one of the valves which jacked up the valve area and even broke off some of the metal on the head around the valve.

The block may still be good but I am not sure. I went ahead and bought a remanufatured 74 (I believe) 350 4 bolt main with flat top pistons. The old engin was a punched out stock 307.

As for the trans, I think this truck spent some time around the Red River area in Oklahoma be fore I got it. All the dirt I have been cleaning off the engine bay has been red.

I would soak the whole thing with degreaser and go watch Horsepower.Then rinse and resoak.Leave it over night and do it again.I like paint to dress up the engine compartment.If you can tow it to the car wash or have a power washer it will come a lot cleaner.Hope you don't got ice.A wire brush and scraper first will make things go quicker.

Plug the yoke hole and cooler line ports and use Easy-Off oven cleaner and the local car wash.

Go at night though, the car wash owners will crap a golden kitty if they catch you there doing that.

My new neighbor 2 doors down has a pressure washer, I should take him some beer and see if he'll let me borrow it.

That sucks about your motor dude. My tranny looked like that too. I used a putty knife and a wire brush, and that got most of the crap off. Then I would use ur neighbor's pressure washer to get rid of the rest of the dirt and grease.

Just a thought but I would service the tranny while you have it out and replace both of the shaft seals on the tranny. I forgot to do mine and one of them is leaking...bummer after you have the engine back into place. The shaft seals are so easy to do when the tranny is sitting in the bed of the truck.

I was thinking about that. I am in no hurry to get it back in, hell the truck has been sitting for 2 years since it broke down.

That first pic looks WAY too familiar. I bought a reman as well (autozone). $800 bucks was a lot cheaper than the GM blocks for $1600. (would of loved to have one, but a budget is a budget). My uncle was kind enough to pressure wash mine. I then used a drill to wire brush the frame. A coat of spray can primer and black paint. I went a little more in depth though. When I had the motor out I tore the entire suspension apart. Clean, sanded, primed and painted everything, added power disks, and bought all new suspension components (ball joints, tie rods etc...) Good luck gettin 'er all back together.

I am seriously thinking about doing that to the suspension. It is also full of mud and grease. Seem so easy since it's all tore down. I did remove the fender wells and am planning on repainting those as well.
