trailer hitch and lights
I may need to put a trailer hitch on my truck in the VERY NEAR FUTURE and wanted to know if anyone could point me in the right direction of where I can find one for our trucks (1970 K20 if that matters).
Also, with regard to hooking up lights and what not, is that a relatively simple connector that I can buy at the autozone and splice into my existing lights? Thanks everyone....the fate of a couple of potential and current project vehicles may lie in the balance!

Re: trailer hitch and lights
I put a class III "Hidden Hitch" on my '72 C10. when it was wrecked, it went onto my '69K10 flawlessly
They sell a kit for your lights. 4-flat is what I have, and it just spliced into the (4) wires running to the lights in the bed. On mine, there's no splice-in for the back-up lights. that wire becomes the ground for the trailer, and attaches to your frame. you'll have 1 wire for both running lights, and then 1 wire for lt brake/turn & a wire for rt brake/turn. There should be wiring instructions on the kit that you buy... |

Re: trailer hitch and lights
No splicing involved on this kit, should be less than 10 bucks too.
Go to your NAPA store, and tell them you need P/N 755 1544 |

Re: trailer hitch and lights
Check out the pictures of my 71 K10 at: http://photobucket.com/albums/v456/chevy71super/
I made a hidden hitch out of a mid 70's to early 80's receiver hitch. I cut it apart and flipped the sides around (left to right, right to left) and bolted it inside the frame rails. Didn't have to mess with the rear spring mounts like some hitches require when you are working on a 4X4.

Re: trailer hitch and lights
I put an ECE hidden hitch on my shortbed. For my C20, believe it or not, I went to UHaul and got a SMOKING deal on a really nice hitch...119 bucks and 25 bucks to install it. They did a beautiful job and I thought the price was right. Sometimes they will make you a great deal just to get rid of an old hitch...like they did for me.

Re: trailer hitch and lights
The uhaul ones aren't specific for our trucks, they fit under the frame but do hang a bit low for my liking (I have one from there) when I asked them for a hitch for my '71 the listing came back as fitting from a '71-87 I think I also paid $119 4 years ago for it but I installed it myself, I should've paid the extra 25 bucks for them to install it as I had to drill 2 holes in my frame to get the hitch on there, nothing like drilling through your frame laying on your back

Re: trailer hitch and lights
You can buy the reciever hitches from JCwhitney, and they're year specific I think. I was going to buy one but I didn't. The step bumper I have is good enough and with a gooseneck hitch in the bed, I don't think I need anymore trailer hitches.

Re: trailer hitch and lights
If you are going to be dragging future projects behind your truck I assume you
will be using a car trailer. That and a vehicle will start to get heavy. I would recommend you get a 10,000 lb. rated reciever hitch made specially for your truck. I have had good luck with Valley brand hitches. As far as light connect- ers go, get whatever matches your trailer. If you are starting fresh, I like the 6-pin conectors that bolt onto your truck w/the metal flap to keep weather out of your electrical connections.

Re: trailer hitch and lights
And before you splice the plug and wires for the trailer in, make sure you check that you don't already have the plug and wires in your truck. The PO did that to my truck and I ended up have to sets of wiring for a trailer.

Re: trailer hitch and lights
Not to highjack the thread, but I'll be picking up a used hitch soon and PO not sure if it's a Class III or IV. Can anyone tell me how to ID it?
Thanks. |

I have also been looking for hitches and some stores have told me that they are the same numbers from 67-87,but i have taken one off of a 86 burb that doesnt bolt up.they are about the same width for the frame but not just a bolt on,i would go for a specific year if i could.i will try to make this one work somehow, any ideas?

Re: trailer hitch and lights
Some receiver hitches for 73-87's will fit our 67-72's, I know the rear bumpers do. I bought a big step bumper off an '84 GMC crewcab and the bumper brackets slid right in next to the frame rails of my '70, I just had to cut an extra hole on each bracket to bolt it to the frame. The brackets on it mounted to the inside of the frame though, instead of the outside like the originals do.
