BB Heater Hoses
I have a 71 SWB BB with ac. The large heater hose is connected to the radiator on the passenger side top. This hose is very close to the ac compressor clutch and belt and looks like it could rub. After reading the attached post, I am a little confused and have a question. Assuming the picture of the BB heater hose routing is correct, why would GM place the connection on the radiator when there is provision to route under the ac compressor to the water pump? GM usually took the safe route. Is there a way to prevent the hose from hitting the ac clutch and not kink the hose at the radiator?
My 68 camaro BB is routed to the water pump and the heater works fine. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...light=radiator |

Re: BB Heater Hoses
The hose to the radiator is the return hose, factory, I believe the hose went into the water pump which is also return.

Re: BB Heater Hoses
That hose originally went to a vacuum operated valve onthe passenger side front fender. This valve kept hot water from circulating through the heater core when the AC was engaged.

Re: BB Heater Hoses
About a month after I bought my truck I noticed that the hose you speak of was worn 3/4 through from rubbing on the compressor just like you said. When I changed the hoses I re-routed that one behind the positive battery cable, which puts just enough pressure on it to give it good clearance.
Why is it designed like that you ask?

Re: BB Heater Hoses
So what is the routing from factory, to water pump or to radiator?
MrC1, I like your explanation for the design if in fact the factory routed it to the radiator. |

Re: BB Heater Hoses
On BB which is a 72 there is a bracket that helps keep the hose away from the compressor .

Re: BB Heater Hoses
Made an executive decision and routed to the water pump.
As for the bracket, I thought there should be one, but I can't find the bolt hole in the inner fender. |

Re: BB Heater Hoses
Here are some pics taken from Chevrolet 10-30 Series Truck Service Manual showing routing and clamping.
Looks like auto trans. trucks should have a clamp at the bottom of the battery tray. First pic shows big block auto.

Re: BB Heater Hoses
Thanks! But I have that Service Manual and those pictures are not in it. I have the Chevrolet Truck Chassis Service Manual Series 10-30. Is there a different Service Manual?

REversed my executive decision today. Put the hose back on the radiator and replugged the water pump.
