To the best of my knowledge, stepside always had chains and fleetside always had a handle. Cold be a modified custom job.

I believe '88 would be the first year for stepsides without chains... that was the first year for the "Styleside" fiberglass bed on the new body style trucks.

XXl is correct on the stepside. '55 to '87 had the same box and tailgate on the step side.
For the fleet side, if I am not mistaken, the first real fleet side was in '60, and it had no chains. (the original fleet side was a step side with fiberglass panel covers just there for looks). |

The first fleetside was a Cameo (57' maybe ???-- unsure of year - ) and also unsure whether it had chains or not....but i'm pretty sure the 63'-66' style fleetsides had chains.......

Well, I don't claim to know it all, and in y defence, I have not seen a 60 - 66 fleet in about 6 years...as long as we get the proper info out, that's all that matters. |

The first real fleetside came in 1958-59. It even had a chrome emblem that said Fleetside in kind of a script. They had chains as did 60-66 fleetsides. Thanks, Lyman.
