Installing a 5 speed

Hello everyone, I'm looking for pros & cons on installing a 91 1/2 ton 5 speed into my 67 1/2 ton. I'm putting a 400smblk with dart pro 1 heads and a few perf. parts in the truck and don't really know how much abuse the trans. might take. It's a nv3500 and don't know it's torque rating. I know everything will bolt in and I'll need a 400 flywheel but was unsure about cutting a hole in the floor (new carpet) and the trans not holding up. Any info would be appreciated

You might PM Huck. He has a 5 speed in one of his trucks. He should be able to let you know what problesm and all there is with the swap.

Does the NV3500 have an integral bellhousing? If so, you'll have to fab up a hyd master cylinder and all that jazz. Huck did his that way, and it worked good. his clutch pedal felt a little funny, but only took 2 or 3 shifts to get it down and be able to drive with out looking like an idiot.
He had a stock crate (260 horse?) 350 in his, but he did do some seriouse hauling too though.

My converstion was with an aluminum based 5speed out of a 96 truck. Don't know the model but it held up well for all applications I had. Only drawback with the hyd clutch was not as soft a pedal as it should have been and the newer transmissions are not setup for gear driven speedo cables. You can get a Richmond 5 speed that will do whatever you want to do with it but it is a pricy solution. My cost me about $1,000. to do total and I enjoyed it totally.

I have everything for the install except figuring out how to make the speedometer work. I'm replacing the bearings now and decided to replace the syncronizers . I have a 700r4 and a 350 turbo, guess it would be easier to use one of them. Just bought a 68 and could use the 5 spd. with my tpi engine in it one of these days. Thanks for info.

It'll never live behind that 400 unless you're really really nice to it.
I've had 2 in my S-10, and now I'm back to a 700r4...

BTW, I have the complete setup I just took out of my S-10. If you need any parts LMK. Trans has a broken shift fork or somthin.

I was planing on some street and strip use and was'nt sure about the torque rating, sooo I guess I'll just stick with a turbo350. Was just thinking I would have an adjustable stall with the 5 speed. I found out it's a lot easier to build a 350th than it has been to rebuild this particular straight shift and it will probably stand more abuse to. At least the ones I've run in the past have.

Mine made about a dozen passes down an 1/8th mile track in my severely traction limited S-10. (Non posi 3.08 daily driver.)
