Vin # ?
Does the vin tell wether it's a 2wd or 4wd? I'm wondering how to title/register/insure my son's project, when we put the 2wd body on the 4wd frame. Anyone have any expierience with this?

Re: Vin # ?
Depends on your DMV, call up the local motor vehicle and ask whether or not the title goes with the cab or the frame. Then you will know how to title the rig, also when you put the cab on the frame, have the local sheriff or state police verify that you did this and then they can issue you a special title that will always be valid in anystate. They will say that the cab was placed on a 4wd frame, also you might just get the vinplate from the 4x4 and put it in the 2wd cab (maybe illegal without the police present?)

Re: Vin # ?
ONless the VIN tag gets moved...I would ensure BOTH titles stay with the completed truck personally. Then no matter what state it goes to, it'll be good to go.

Re: Vin # ?
Well..the vins typically start with a C for 2 wd and a K for 4x4..now there are exceptions with special orders and such...but one other thing is in 1972 they vins started with C to mean Chev and a T for GMC...so a 72 4x4 gmc vin would start TKE242***** for example being referred would be a GMC, 4x4, 8 cyl, 3/4, box style, 1972 pickup.
If I've been reading your posts correct I think your swapping 71 stuff....so it will just start with a K on a 4x4 or a 2wd will start with a C as such for 1971.

When the guy who did the work finished the job he went to the Wyoming DMV where they used the "K" number. I'm three owners and two states away from that job. The guy I bought it from is a good friend who was handed a pack of paper when he bought the truck out there. It contained photocopies of ALL versions of BOTH titles. When we got the truck here (Minnesota) he handed me the pack of paper. This pack of paper was a big help. They ran both VINs to check for stolen vehicles. They also inspected the truck where I showed them the B-pillar "C" VIN and the partial "K" VIN on the left frame rail which matched the "K" title I had a photo copy of. The MN DMV elected to title it as a "C" because that is what the cop would most easily see when looking at the VIN. Every time I post this information somebody chimes in and says, "Oh yeah?!? Well screw the DMV" But remember posession of a stolen vehicle is a felony. Do it right the first time and be done with it. Personally I don't care what the title says, as long as it is legal. If I ever sell my truck it will come with a legal MN title. To make a really long story short, as others have pointed out, check with YOUR DMV.
