gmc year id help

a girlfriend of mine sent me some pics of a friends gmc today. it needs a cam. he was going to replace whole engine with one from another truck he had bought for that purpose.he is now thinking he may never get to it. of course i want it. i 'm looking for help in determining the year. i'v narowed it down to 69-71 by foot operated parking break and door panels not being of a 72. so i guess the grill would be next i'm not familiar with them on the gmc.and at this time don't know if it has disc breaks and have no pics of tailgate.grill has black trim and parking lights and turn signals directly beneith the headlights can any one help id this. it has ps pb ac duel sadel tanksand looks pretty nice in pics thanks

Re: gmc year id help

best way is to get the vin number and look at the 5th digit

67s most have small back windows.no side marker lights, and GMC was on the grille center.5th didgit in vin is 7
68s have the slanted hood with the gmc letters on the front of it.the 5th digit in the vin is an 8
****on canadian 67-68 gmc trucks only there is an extra number in the vin on gmcs.these trucks had the number 9 in between the frist to letters
example my 68 gmc subs vin is..........K9E2681XXXXXX
ONLY the canadian made dmcs had the 9 in between the frist two letters not the chevys................this is the reason we have the 910,920 and 930 gmc emblems up here

69s had one year only vinyl door panels(if it has them some are steel)the vinyl ones have gmc in the upper center of the vinyl ones.5th vin digit is a 9
70s
are hard to tell from the 69s unless it has the vinyl door panels. The 5th digit in the vin is a z
71s had a raised pad if the interior miror sat on (only year for this)disc front brakes were first availble from the factory. The digit in the vin is a 1
72s the interior mirrior was glued to the windsheild.only year in these trucks to have the plastic molded door panels.General motors added a letter to all truck vin this year.frist digit was either a tor a c(t=gmc,c=chevy)the 5th digit was a 2

hope this helps

The 70/71(& 72) will have a wider verticle bar in the grille with black accenting there and around the perimeter.Making it look like two seperate grilles, kinda. The 69 and earlier will have the narrower all chrome center, etc.

That`s what I thought(then I didn`t,then I did,then I didn`t),but I keep seeing trucks with the later grille that people claim are original 70s.You`re right,they`re wrong,I`m confused.
