Oil Filter Confussion
Just got my 81 this weekend and went to the parts store to get some oil and a new filter. Back 10 yrs ago when I had an 82 with a 305 it used a AC Delco PF35 oil filter but when I went to the parts store I could find one. When I looked at their book that they have laying out it showed that the AC Delco filter was a PF1218C. I put the filter on and it fit fine. Is there a difference in the filters? Did I make a big mistake?

Re: Oil Filter Confussion
I use the 1218. I think, but I am not sure, that the 1218 is an improved filter design with an antidrainback valve. It keeps the oil from draining back into the pan when the engine is shut off so it can build up pressure quicker when started. That is my understanding.
Or maybe that is all wrong... Slonaker |

Re: Oil Filter Confussion
I've been using the 1218 for years on all my GM cars. A few weeks ago when I did an oil change on my truck, I noticed that the 1218 was much shorter and flimisier than the one I took off the truck. I don't know if Delco started outsourcing them or what, but it was a cheap POS. I went to the parts store yesterday and noticed that they now appear to be back to normal, so I bought 4 of them before they get more cheap ones. Just pay attention to them when you buy them to make sure you're getting what you expect.

I isn't moonshine or anything. It was a special edition bottle put out by Jim Beam according to the google search I just did. http://www.jimbeamclub.com/pictorials/lionstone/misc/ I'm not a whiskey drinker, so they are all gut burners to me. They all burn all the way down. Slonaker Last edited by Slonaker; 03-13-2006 at 02:47 PM. |

Re: Oil Filter Confussion
ok the pf35 was replaced by the pf1218 because of the material and drainback valve being added
the pf35l is a pf35 with sythetic meadia also the pf25 was replaced by the pf454 both the pf454 and pf1218 are interchangable and the are both smaller than there original numbers the 400 can take either all depends on space with the 454 being smaller Last edited by WLPTMP; 03-13-2006 at 08:58 PM. |
