Re: Oil Leak
Is it bad, or is it just a drip? If a sbc doesn't leak, there's something wrong.

Re: Oil Leak
It sounds like oil from the rear main seal. There are instructions on 73-87.com for replacing it. If it isn't motor oil, then it is coming from the front of the transmission.
Other possibilities-leaking fom back of intake, leaking from back of valve cover, leaking from oil pressure sending unit (behind distributor on smallblocks). That one drove me crazy once until I finall found the source. It could also be the oil pan gasket. Clean everything up and make sure you know where it is coming from before you start replacing parts. I have made that mistake too many times. ![]() Slonaker Last edited by Slonaker; 03-25-2006 at 11:16 PM. |

Re: Oil Leak
Definitely start with the cheaper things first. That has saved me a couple time in the past. But you aren't really going to see what it is until you clean that underside up. I have tried to chase a leak without cleaning stuff up and ended up replacing parts when all I needed was a new oil pan gasket.

Re: Oil Leak
always check the easy things first.one other possability is the rear cam plug. but most likley the pan gasket or rear main seal. its all a process of elimination.

Re: Oil Leak
well, i took off my plastic flywheel cover, right on the back of my motor, where the oil pan has a U shape that goes to block its leaking about right there in a small spot and i notice old oil caked on oil pan, so im ASSUMING its oil pan gasket as it leaks very slow which leads me to believe its not rear main seal or it would leak more, i could be wrong ill have to check it out more.

Re: Oil Leak
Well, dog gone it, it looks as if that motor is shot---you are just going to have to pull it and give it to me and go buy a new one. If that does not appeal to you, then I would try tightening the pan bolts very easily and then look forward to a change out of the gasket. How many miles does that motor have on it? There may be just a gasket replacement coming or should you look forward to a rebuild.
