Windshield Glass is Cloudy - New Windshield?

Is there anything that can be done when a windshield, or any auto glass for that matter, gets that white, cloudy haze on it. My windshield has this along the bottom where it meets the gasket. I guess it's moisture that causes it. Is it time for a new windshield? Thanks.

Nothing you can do, just the aging process. Replace it.

This summer when I was working at the body shop on my cab we had just finished painting it and the owner asked if i wanted to take off the gloss on the top of the dashboard. He said that really glossy/reflective dashboards (like ours painted) would eventually cause windshields to get hazy like that.
Just a little FYI.

Is it oxidized? Ive seen a polisher get it off, it was some commercial "Flitz" or something like that. Try something liek that or the mothers power ball.

Re: Windshield Glass is Cloudy - New Windshield?

It is from the layers of glass separating and allowing moisture to seep in.

Re: Windshield Glass is Cloudy - New Windshield?

A freind of mine said he had a 69 once that did the same thing. He waited for a hot day and heated it with a heat gun to get the haze out. I haven't tried it yet. I'll try it this summer to see if it works. Mine is pretty bad.

it's not just moisture, but the layers actually seperating.
Has nothing to do with reflections from the dash either. From the factory, the top of the dash was flat paint, and every one of these trucks that I have seen with original glass was fogged to a point, and normally up top too.

I agree with longhorn, it's the sheets seperating, and from my experience once it starts the only way your gonna get rid of it is to get a new one.

Re: Windshield Glass is Cloudy - New Windshield?

Thanks guys. That's kind of what I thought. I had a '59 about 20 years ago that had some fogging on one of the side windows. Somebody told me back then that it's moisture in between the layers, as I recall. Sounds like a new windshield for the C30. 70c10, I'll bet you're right, it's going to look like a whole new world through that new windshield.

The flat paint on a dash is so that you don't get reflections in your windshield from the dash.

Re: Windshield Glass is Cloudy - New Windshield?

It is from the glass delaminating. There is nothing you can do but replace it and you should, not just from the visibility stand point but for saftey reasons too. The shatter strength of the glass depends upon this lamination. The plastic core is what retains the fragments when the glass breaks.

In most states there is a maximum measurement that is considered safe/legal in a commercial situation. It is part of the vehicle inspection process in the CDL test. I don't know if this applies to personal vehicles, but it sure can't be a bad thing........
