Are hand throttles rare?

Hey just picked up a parts truck. Had a pto and a blade on it at some time. So in the right side of the instrument panel there is a (looks factory) hand throttle. Even has a little "throttle" label on it. Never seen one before, are these common?
cheers

Re: Are hand throttles rare?

The pto was taken off the truck, it had a cover put back on the tranny. It was mounted right behind the cab on the frame, the box was moved back a little to allow the cable to straight up to a steel frame above the box.Wish it was still on the truck.

Re: Are hand throttles rare?

The 67-70 hand throttle cable went through the firewall and attaches to the firewall arm. The 71-72 hand throttle cable attaches to the linkage inside the cab.

Yes they are rare. I looked for 5 years before I found my 1st plastic plate. I already had the other parts but could not find the label. Stopped at an OLD junk yard and the owner said "that truck there - the old air force one - has the tag laying on the floor". Sure enough there it was. He said take it - no charge.

He has since passed on and his yard cleared out. I still think of him when I drive that truck.

Congradulations on your find - Bob

Re: Are hand throttles rare?

I have a choke/throttle setup on a stock-as-a rock '68 396 truck that came with a two-barrell Holley carb from the factory. There is no PTO on the truck, it was just setup that way to give the carb a fast-idle circuit. You pull the throttle almost all the way out and at the end it just pulls the idle up a bit--kinda like propping a stick on the gas pedal. It works.

Re: Are hand throttles rare?

Anybody have any pictures, or even a good description, of how the cable attaches to the pedal on a '71/'72? My '72 has the cable, plastic tag, etc, but somebody ran it through the firewall to the carb. There is a screw and a clamp on the pedal assembly for the cable housing (near where a TH400 kickdown switch would go), but I would like to know how to properly attach the cable itself.

Thanks

John

Re: Are hand throttles rare?

Not to jack your thread but my truck does have one and for the life of me I can't understand why.

There is no PTO on it 350/350/205 normal K20 IMHO.
I suspect it hauled a slide in camper perhaps it was to keep the idle speed up enough to keep the alt charging the batteries or something ?

Re: Are hand throttles rare?

I don`t consider tow hooks or am/fms rare either.Just not a commonly ordered option. There`s plenty out there, but most didn`t have them. With tow hooks,it would be rare to find them on a 2wd.On 4wds it was uncommon. It`s up to individuals to judge for themselves.Alot of these options I never knew existed the first 15 years I drove these trucks and everyone came to me as the 67-72 guy.Once I started networking across the country I started seeing alot more of what was available. It wasn`t until I got my hands on a dealer ordering book or my own parts book that I really knew what could be had. Now,with internet knowledge abounds for all.A heater delete would be rare since it was a standard feature and all trucks had them unless deleted.I`d say about any delete would be rare. They are in a different category from options to me.

Re: Are hand throttles rare?

hey vee, the cable housing gets clamped and the inner cable attaches with the screw. The way that it is done allows the pedal to move as if there was not a cable attached. I unbolted the entire foot pedal so i can reuse it in a different truck.

Re: Are hand throttles rare?

My '67 k10 has one, but the cable no longer attaches to the handle. GM just crimped a flat spot in the cable inside of a hole in the handle. It allows the handle to turn for fine adjustments without turning the cable.

Re: Are hand throttles rare?

My 72 K5 Blazer has one, but it was a Game and Fish truck here in AZ. So, I imagine it was ordered in order to allow the truck to crawl while looking for bad guys (poachers). It also had a plate full of toggles to "black out" the lights, kinda like the moonshiners would do. Flip the switch and the brake lights don't light when you brake (game and fish did it so they could sneek up on poachers in the dark without anyone seeing them and the moonshiners did so the Revenuers didn't know there was a sharp curve coming and they'd drive through it and into the ditch/woods.) I can post a pict tonight as I have the whole underdash unit in tact and the dash is out for repairs!!

Re: Are hand throttles rare?

My dad's 72 K10 had one. We used it to feed livestock. Put the truck in 4-LO, first gear, pull out the throttle and jump in back and feed. The truck would just "crawl" along. Local dealer ordered them that way for the ranchers.

Mine was a ranch truck as well. I always assumed the hand throttle was for feeding.
