Axle bearing ?
I have developed a grinding in my rear end. I am pretty sure it is an axle bearing, and before I start to work on it, I would like to know if they are pressed on or not.
Any extra info on this job would be appreciated as well. Thanks, JP

Re: Axle bearing ?
Since you have a 71 C-10, you will need to pull the "C" clips off of the axles to remove them. The "C" clips are located in the differential case so the cover has to be removed as well as the pin for spider gear. With the drums off and the "C" clips removed the axles will slide out easily.
The bearings are pressed into the axle housing on both sides and can be removed with a slide hammer or similar. The bearings consist of the outer race and rollers with the rollers riding on the axle. If the bearings are noisy then it is very likely that the axles will be spalled and will need to be replaced. When you remove the axles, look at the area on the axles where the rollers ride to make sure whether they are good or bad. Jim |
