Got Body Mounts? (w/pics)

I don't. Look at my rear body mounts located near the tow package. This is the right side. The actuall rubber between the frame and body is compressed to about 1/8". Makes it a little tough to put the bumper on properly.

Pretty Sweet huh. The bolts are totally loose. I'm glad I already have a complete set waiting for all the mounts.

I think those are the washers on the frame...in little pieces.

Got mine from LMC. Hate to admit but I didn't really shop around. A friend of mine was shocked to here they cost over $150. You can check energy suspension. They only sell through dealers but their site has a dealer locator.

Most of the work I need to do is bolt on. I do feel lucky. But I had to pay for it too.

That is funny!

Re: Got Body Mounts? (w/pics)

Just a little info for you, I ordered mine from GMCPaul's. They were put together with the correct bolt, washer, shims, rubber & nut for the corresponding locations. My buddy bought his from LMC & the came loose in the box & he had to figure it out by looking in their catalog. Cost about the same. Just FYI.

I have not looked at my new ones too hard yet. I do know each mount is packaged seperately. The question is where each one goes. Once I crack em' open I let you know.

Re: Got Body Mounts? (w/pics)

With the LMC kit each pack is labeled. You have to cross reference the label on the bag containing each mounts hardware with the LMC catalog.

LMC is like going to Vegas. Somehow they keep telling you to reference their catalog. Just like asking for direction in Vegas "Sir the elevators are through the slots and past the blackjack tables on the left."

How do you remove and replace the body mounts? One at a time? Any torque specs on them?

Re: Got Body Mounts? (w/pics)

I loosened up the entire right side. Some bolts just broke off. They get worse going from front to rear. The last two were toast on the right side. I have yet to touch the left side. I'm gonna have to remove my radiator it looks like in order to access those underneath it.

My buddy said I should loosen the left side too, before I jacked up the right rear corner. But the left side was pretty much toast too. So they were loose.

I pretty much put a 2x4 (flat) on top a 4x4 (standing up) to spread the loat on the floor.

I don't know about the torque specs. I sure they are listed in one of my manuals. I use the two grunts tight technique

Re: Got Body Mounts? (w/pics)

So many things to do. So much money to spend... Let me know if you notice a difference. I wanna check my mounts to see what condition they are in. I finally moved enough of the mulch in front of my garage to get the blazer out. If I remember correctly, mine looked pretty crappy.

Re: Got Body Mounts? (w/pics)

Hey Green Monster,
The factory assembly manual says 35-55 lbs-foot of torque. Shimming #1 and #2 adjusts the "door gap" and shimming #3 and #4 positions may be needed to "table" all the tub mounts.
I have the LMC set also and all are tight individually wrapped so nuthin fell apart. I wanted rubber as it sounds like the neoprene ones that are cheaper can squeak quite badly.

Later---DAC

Re: Got Body Mounts? (w/pics)

Explain to me how shimming can help realign panels. I really need some panel realignment. My drivers side door where it strikes is a 1/2' gap or bigger. When you say "table" do you mean "level" in a way?

Re: Got Body Mounts? (w/pics)

Since I havent put mine in yet I am not real tekkie about it but what I know for sure is that shimming the mounts or bad ones drastically effects the door alignment. There is that much flex in the tub. The mount under your feet passenger side(#1) in my Jimmy is bad and that caused that corner of the tub to drop, making the strike side on the door too high, and increased the gap at the strike area. Also if #2 is bad that will cause that to happen, but will probly tighten that gap at the strike. The bottom gap at the rocker panel will tell you if front or rear is low. Ya have to visualize the tub kinda floating on them then imagine what flex a mount lower than the others will do to the shape of the tub.
I think getting the tub to "table" means having all mounts touching the tub equally without tightening any mounts. Not sure about shims, still researching that. The manual says that the tabling step is only necassary if more than one shim is used at the #2 position.

This is probly clear as mud but maybe it'll help---DAC

Re: Got Body Mounts? (w/pics)

Got it. It makes tons of sense now that I have visualized it.

I put in a few mounts. Once I'm done I'll see how things have changes. Maybe I should take pics! Before and after. Today I'm building workbenches in my shop and next Friday I leave for a week long fishing trip in NorCal. I won't have the mounts in for a couple of weeks it looks like.

Re: Got Body Mounts? (w/pics)

Awesome info 70GMCJimmy. Thanks for the torque specs too. Are any shims provided in the kit? I think my tub could use a litte adjustment as my tub looked like it sagged a little when I removed the top. My Blazer is rust free (really) and the boxes are in awesome shape. So think the mounts need to be replaced and adjusted.

Re: Got Body Mounts? (w/pics)

A little more info please, 70GMCJimmy - are you suppose to do this with the top on & bolted or with the top off? I would think top off since these rigs were designed without a top. My buddy just did his, & he had the top on, but now I'm thinking that the top isn't letting his tub flex as much so he doesn't see the difference in the gaps. Thanks for the info so far. I'll be doing mine soon as well.

Re: Got Body Mounts? (w/pics)

Hey Guys-
Thanks for the comments!

RunTMCfan- It would be very cool to see pics and your observations of any differences from your old mounts. We are getting a new modular home right now and they hauled away our 1972 wobblebox(trailer house) so I cant get to my Jimmy to take any pics of the mount problem since we are living in my shop and 25 years of shyt is piled in front of it right now.

GreenMonster- I havent opened the individual packs of mounts, but I'm sure that no shims are included. Just what ya see in the LMC catalog-84 pieces- bolts, nuts, washers, and rubber is the one I bought. That's why I mentioned doin research on shims. Rust free truck ya have? Wow! This one is close to it in the tub, but I have to do some patch panels on the outer skin.

ClassicJimmy- The pic from the manual shows no top, so I'm gonna assume thats how GM did it. I'm thinkin I may try it with the wieght of the top on it tho, with all the bolts real loose just in case the added wieght of the double wall top changes anything. Probly a dumb theory, but at this point I'm not doin a full resto, as this was my Mom's ride for 29 years, and due to her health issues at 83 years old, I just am tryin to get the truck roadworthy and lookin fresh again by next fall. She keeps tellin me she wants to drive it again, if I can lift her up into the drivers seat! Thats why I'm not disassembling this one as far as I should.

Keep us posted on what y'all learn on this guys!----DAC

I would replace the mounts with the top off. My tub sagged after a few days of not having the top on.

Re: Got Body Mounts? (w/pics)

Just wondering if there is a direct web for GMCPaul. I need to pick up some new body mounts also and I need to keep it simple as possible.

As soon as I become a little better with the digital camera i'll get some pictures up of my 1970.
