Is there an easy way to remove the hood springs with out removing the hinges? Got some used springs off a guy and want to see if they work better than mine but dont really want to undo the hinges.

Have a friend hold the hood open and use a screwdriver to take the springs off.

I don't think I ever had problems just manhandling mine off by myself... or putting a hood hinge on by myself (although a perfectly sized 2x6 helped a lot)

so if I remember right, just try to grab the main part of the spring, and wiggle it around and wiggle it off (it might help or not to move the hood around to try and get that "perfect" angle)

I prop up the hood, grab the springs and pull.

I think I used a piece of small ( 1/4" ) nylon rope looped around the hook part of the spring. The other part of the rope I wrapped around a piece of broom handle or dowel or something. The piece of wood gives you a good handle to pull with and keep your hands away from the spring. Springs scare the hell out of me. They move fast and can pinch like a nasty little girl.

Here is what I did....I grabbed a crowbar out of the shed (stay with me here). On my crowbar, there is a flat end and a hoked end. The flat end has a teardrop-shaped cutout for grabbing nailheads. The hook of my springs fits into that cutout perfectly....leaving the hooked end of the crowbar available for me to grab onto and pull. Lots less force needed if you can stand in front of the grill and not have to sit on the radiator!!!!

I've done this once. I used a good pair of vice grips, while the hood was up (and propped with a broom) I put the grip on the front hook thing and pulled and it came right off. The pain in the arse is putting it back on. I shoved a couple large screwdrivers between the coils so it was easier to get it back on using the vice grip method

I use a rag or towel apx 8"x12".. center it on the front hook and use it as handles ..have a friend hold the hood open and pull like hell. Also works great for re-install. You might pinch part of the rag in there but thats easier to get out than your finger.. and also wont scratch yur paint
