Removable Tailgate
Hi all!
On later trucks the tailgate can be easily removed to make loading easier. Has anyone converted a 67-72 Fleetside to be able to unhook the gate? Regards /Tomme

Re: Removable Tailgate
um, it's not hard to remove the gate. lift 45 up to unhook the supports, tilt down past 90 degrees, unbolt one trunion, push the unbolted side of tailgate up until it comes off the bed/trunion.

Re: Removable Tailgate
My dad and I did that to my 72. You can have the gate off in under a minute. I'll take a few pics of the mod and post them later...

Re: Removable Tailgate
Hi guys, and thanks for your replies.
matthufham, i am after a solution that makes it easy to remove the gate on "the field" without tools. Just as you can with the later gen trucks. It looks like 72 CustomCamper might have the solution i am looking for. I am looking forward to see the pics. Tomme

Re: Removable Tailgate
Ok Tomme, here are the pics.
Firts is the modified trunion. Second is the stock trunion. Third is the modification to the tailgate itself. Last is the other side of the gate that's the same as the first side before modification. ... Chuck

Re: Removable Tailgate
Great,Thanks!
It looks pretty much similar to how i rember it was on a -79 Silverado i had some years ago, nice work. I think i will try to do the same mod as you have. Did you have to do any mods on the gate links, to be able to unhook them? Tomme

Re: Removable Tailgate
Make the supports quick release and you can get it under 30 seconds

Re: Removable Tailgate
The supports already release quickly. Lift thhe gate up slightly and bend them towards the rear then lift the gate to about a 45 degree angle and pull them off...

Re: Removable Tailgate
The P/O did that mod to my 72 K20 but got a little carried away with the size/width of the cut out on the tail gate so now if a person (who isn't aware) closes the gate by pushing up from the passenger's side, the drivers side will 'pop' out and fall onto the bumber.
It's a great mod but just giving you fair warning to only trim as needed. |
