Hey guys! On the coil ignition system on some of the older vehicles what is the white block that appears to be a resistor and what part does it play in the ignition system?

It's exactly that.. a resistor. Balast resistor to be correct. Mostly used by chrysler, its used to reduce the 12v battery voltage down to 6-8 volts for the ignition coil.

Gm usually used a resistor wire and not a block.

What is the possibility of this thing going bad. Buddies boat won't fire. No spark to plugs. Put a known good coil in it ect. ect. Looking at this resistor now?

With a volt meter, check the voltage going into the block and coming out. You should see about a 30% decrease in voltage.
If you have 12 going in you should have (6-7 roughly) coming out
