TH350 wont stay in gear

Hi There,
My green and white has a th350 that the detents inside the trany seem to be completely wore out. Can you repair them without completely disasembaling the transmission? I have a blown th350 for parts. Just wandering. If to much work I will install the transmission out of my orange and white. Thanks for any help.

Re: TH350 wont stay in gear

You will be able to fix that by dropping the pan. There is a flat spring with a roller on the end that rides in the detent cam on the linkage. Sounds like that might have broken or came loose. Getting the pan off without causing an Exxon Valdez on the driveway will be harder than fixing it !!!

However, first, disconnect the linkage and see if the problem is in the tranny, or in the column. Those column shifters were the worst thing GM ever did...well, worst thing they did back then anyways.

Re: TH350 wont stay in gear

Its in the tranny. I have changed the colum to the one from my orange and white which is fine. I know I first thought it was the colum. When I changed colums I checked the lever on the side of tranny. It moves with very little pressure not like my orange and white which is stiff and stays in gear. Draining it aint to bad as I changed the fluid when I bought it in 2001. Its one with the drain plug in the pan. I feel real sorry for guys that dont have the plug, like Green Machine said the exxon valdez. Thanks for the help guys. Anymore info is always welcomed. Thanks!

Re: TH350 wont stay in gear

thanks guys. The main reason I asked the question is that some time in the near future I will have to drop the tranny to fix the torque converter seal. It leaks like a sive. So I figured I might try to fix the detent if I have it out. If was to be hard I was just going to stick my other tranny in it but it sounds like an easy fix, except removing the tranny. So now I can save my really good tranny for my orange and white. oh by the way the colum detents do hold in park and drive but reverse or second you have to hold which is a pain. So I hope I can get to this soon. Thanks again.
