71 CST mirrors

Have a 71 Custom 402 with the outside mirrors removed. Can anyone tell me which mirrors belong with this truck?

Re: 71 CST mirrors

You could have had 4 different styles of mirrors on that truck. Look for evidence of body work. Your options are the sport mirror, 2 sizes of "below eyeline" tripod mirrors, the bigger camper mirrors, and 2 sizes of JR West Coast mirrors. What does it say on your glovebox? I don't think the sport mirrors would have been listed, everything else was optional and should have been listed.

You don't mention 1/2, 3/4, or 1 ton either. The mirrors used went along with the trucks intended use. The heavier duty the truck the bigger the mirrors tend to be.

Re: 71 CST mirrors

They are the ones that look like car mirrors. What model`71 is your truck? There weren`t CSTs after`71,although it might say Custom Sport Truck Equipment on the VIN-spec sheet. There was only one below-eyeline mirror for 71/72 and a slightly different one for 69/70.They look the same, yet slight differences. The Jr West Coasts were a 67/68 option. There were Sr West Coasts, but I`ve only seen them on 30 series. These are the only mirrors that stayed the same in 67-72s.The base mirror stayed the same 67/70,then 71/72.The optional mirror changed every two years. The low-mount camper/trailering mirrors were 69/72.All Sport mirrors were chrome. All others available painted or bright(stainless/chrome).

Re: 71 CST mirrors

O.K. went out and looked at option list again. I made a mistake. The glove box options list a D29 below eyeline mirror. Have no clue what this looks like. The truck I have is a 71 402 short box with ac, power steering, power front disk brakes, heavy duty rear spring. It has Custom/10 and 8/396 emblems on the fendors.

Re: 71 CST mirrors

Yeah, when trucks were trucks, good mirrors were an important feature. Those little sport mirrors look sleek in comparison. Can`t see chit outta them, though.

Re: 71 CST mirrors

I agree also. My first 71 Cheyenne Super had the little sport mirrors. As for the right side mirror, it might as well have not been there. The left side you could move your head and wind up seeing something back there, but it wasn't trustworthy. I'm in a quandry now. I may just leave as is and not have the side mirrors.

By the way, I didn't mean anything bad about the truck in the picture. It's just the mirrors in question are really for work trucks, or trucks used for towing and my truck is definately not being used in that way. I guess I'll just keep my eyes opened and if I run across the correct mirrors, I'll purchase, then decide whether to install.

One other thing, why do they call these below eyeline mirrors?

Re: 71 CST mirrors

Onless you have a buddy in the sysdtem, TX inspection requires 2 mirrors, be it dvr door and inside, or dvr door and pass door.

All I run is a rearview and it passes evertime. Only have to have at least one mirror here

Re: 71 CST mirrors

I had it inspected in Jan, 06 with only the rearview mirror. I think because it's exempt from emissions, most inspectors exempt it from just about everything. They just make sure the brakes, horn, windshield wipers and lights work. Kind of like it was when I started driving a long time ago.
