68 swb I just bought off ebay, funny story
I got a killer deal I think, but had to drive to KC to pick it up. 9hr drive back to Dallas and that was after I replaced a bent pushrod and a cracked rocker on the #7 cyl. Funny story. I get there with my dad and it had a slight tick to it, thought oh it's just a loose rocker. Well we pull the valve cover real quick and find a bent pushrod and cracked rocker. The guy had a bunch of old junk small blocks that I salvaged a pushrod and rocker from. I threw the pushrod adn rocker in and tightened all the rockers up.
The truck busted right off with not a hint of knock and I took it for a quick drive. It was fine, I guess some moron over reved it or something. She ran great all the way to OKC and then dark set and I flip the headlights on for 15mins and all the sudden I have no power. Altenator died. The truck dies going down I35. So I pullover and my dad throws the jumper cables on and we charge it for 20-30 mins. I get back on the road and it didn't last 30 mins. We pulled over again and charged it, but this time my dad told me not to turn the lights on and just hug his back bumper all the way home. Well about an hour later almost home, she dies again. We pull over and charge it again. 45mins later we are finally home. I know I'm crazy for driving with no headlights but my dad forgot to bring the tow strap. Oh well we made it and my truck was not left on the side of the road. Not bad though considering we almost left the truck sitting there after seeing the bent pushrod and cracked rocker. My dad was really cool headed about it and if it wasnt for him, I would have never bought it. Last edited by 68laydout; 06-21-2006 at 09:38 AM. |

Nice looking truck. What plans do you have for it besides getting the bugs worked out?

Re: 68 swb I just bought off ebay, funny story
Thanks fella's. First thing is getting it to run good. It has a small cam and some other goodies but the carb needs some tuning. Its running rich and cough's black smoke when you get on it real hard. I was told the engine has only 15k on it. It has a .30 over bore, keith black pistons, edelbrock performer intake and 600cfm carb. The exhaust is all factory so that will be on the top of my list. It has cherry bombs that are just horrible sounding. I'm going to get some cheap headers, w/dynomax bullets and 3in pipe dumped before the axle for now.
The next step is getting this thing on the ground. Z the frame out back and bag it. I'm definently going to shave the door handles and locks real soon. I'm thinking either a viper red or black paint job. I want to keep the classic look for sure but with a little twist here and there. |

Re: 68 swb I just bought off ebay, funny story
That's a great story...good deal on getting her home!!! My first 67-72 truck was a 72' K-10...flew from Denver to DFW and drove her home. I had electrical issues where I thought I was going to be stuck too... but got her home. My 71' C-10 was found an hour and a half from my home and the PO delivered it! Congrats dude...love that 68'...oh and welcome from Denver!

Re: 68 swb I just bought off ebay, funny story
How many of us can honestly say, we've never done anything like that to get home? I know I sure have... done way worse things too ... and I know I'll do it again.
Pretty sweet ride you got there, and in some parts, 2200 is a steal for a running driving (rust free?) SWB truck. |

Yup, braking down on the way home sucks, really makes you feel bad about your purchase. Once its in the driveway, its all good. Nice buy!
