I almost wet myself...

While crusing down the hwy at about 65 I see a rock fly up aimed right for my forhead. Made a nice big divit right in my line of sight about 2" in diameter. It made me jump and say a few things that would make my wife blush. Funny thing is, the same thing happened 3 months ago. It was slightly smaller and the star-crack is only 1" on that one but this sucks!

So, now I guess I should look into getting my windshield replaced. Do the new windshilds offer any better chip/crack resistance?

Re: I almost wet myself...

Man that sucks. I seriously doubt newer windshields hold up any better though. I busted one in a 2000 Z71 with a pretty small rock. Cracked the windshield in my freightliner a while back, and that winsheild is a good 6 or 7 feet in the air, behind a bigg freakin hood and a bug guard, lol. sad thing is the rock came off a tiny ford ranger, and i was a couple hundred feet behind him. saw it coming, but what can ya do?

I had a dump truck spill about a gallon bucket full of gravel on me, hit the windshield right in front of my face. Talk about your ass taking bites out of the seat!

Amazing how you can see rocks in slow motion right before they put a divot in your windshield isn't it

Re: I almost wet myself...

True sad story, My wife and I had a friend of ours loose her life in exactly the same way. On the way to Magic Mountain (can't remember the hwy they have widened it now, but it is the most deadly road in CA, goes though Fillmore) anyway 4-5" size rock came through the windshield her Dad was driving she was the passenger and hit her in the head, killed her instantly. Sad story...sorry, but true.

Re: I almost wet myself...

I recently put a new windshield in my 71. Used the hook tool you can buy at the auto store and some lube. Tool worked really well. Took about two hours by myself. Put the new weather stripping on the glass and held it in place with some good masking tape. Set the glass on the bottom of the opening and worked out to the lower corners and then up the sides and accross the top. Go slow or it will pop.

Re: I almost wet myself...

I had a box (50) of 1 x 3/4 pvc bushings blow out of the back of my truck hit my trailer and explode all over the minivan tailgating me. I really felt bad. The windshield looked like it had been thru a hailstorm. I will bet you that lady doesnt tailgate anymore.

Re: I almost wet myself...

Both of my last 2 dd have had dings in the hood just right of center in the front. The first was from a lugnut off an 18 wheeler.I could see it coming then it hit the hood and bounced up in the air in front of mehung suspended there while the windshield ran into it and I was crawling for the passenger floorboard.
The next one was just a rock and I was lucky it didn't hit anything but the hood.
For some reason I always seem to head for the Pass floorboard.I guess I don't want to get tangled in the pedals.

A good tip here. Note where it says, "new weather stripping". That alone helps A BUNCH!

Re: I almost wet myself...

I found it cheaper installed by Smartglass than I could have one delivered to my door. 150.00 installed with a new gasket.

Re: I almost wet myself...

I had a golf ball come at me on the highway, lucky I was in my brothers Honda.
I also could not believe that the golf ball was moving in slow motion as I sped into it. POW!! and the bumper set it sailing the other direction. Didn't see where it went, but my guess it was traveling at the speed of sound after I hit it. Nice deep round dent in the bumper.

Re: I almost wet myself...

well I got my new glass(hurricane smashy smashy) installed for like $230. Was ppg safety glass sourced and installed by a local place called gator glass. They even came out to my place to install it( hard to drive with a busted windshield) for no additional charge.

I'd call a few of your local autobody glass places, and see what they can do.
(in my case , it would have taken them 3 months to get a new gasket, and for $80. So I bought it from brothers for $50 shipped and got it in a week. They said if I could get the part faster, the faster they could install the glass!)

Also, and possibly of more importance, the law in some states says that your Insurance must replace your windshield. At least in FL, it's that way, I don't know about the other 49!
Both my brother and some friends have had thier windshields replaced by Insurance, even with insurance with no collision. I had the truck off the road for 18 Months, and had cancelled insurance, but found out when I re-instated it, that my windshield would have been covered(again with no collision!)

food for thought

Re: I almost wet myself...

The 72 I am putting back together needed the windshield re installed so I purchased a new rubber from LMC. After the glass man was at my house for two hours fighting with it he talked me into purchasing a new glass ( old one had a small chip) and rubber from him. Safelite auto glass in MD installed my rear window, and their new glass and rubber for $300. Not sure what was wrong with the LMC rubber, but the glass would not fit with it.

Re: I almost wet myself...

Alot of places can move a little on there prices too... tell them you can get it done cheaper from somewhere else. I was amazed how much they came down in price. These people get incredible deals on there glass and usually have room to play, also some places will give you a "fleet discount" if you have more than one window to install. More food for thought..
