Purty - did you just clean and paint it or do an overhaul?

Re: got my engine back in

it was a complete rebuild. I tore it apart and sent it off to the machine shop. Got it back, reassembled it, painted it. New radiator, water pump, HEI distributor, etc.

Re: got my engine back in

The choices for paint were "chevy blue" and "chevy orange", and I guess I thought the orange wasn't really my thing (I'm only 26, so I don't have the nostalgic satisfaction of seeing original chevy orange). It turned out that "chevy blue" is almost the exact same shade as the original body paint, which is kind of neat looking.

Re: got my engine back in

vettevet - yeah, it was definitely necessity which drove that invention! I didn't realize that an inline 6 would be so long. All that weight out front makes it really unstable on the cheapest engine stand from hardbor freight. After I pulled the engine and mounted it on the stand, I realized it looked a little unstable, and I nearly lost it when I have it a nudge test.

moral of the story: I should have spent an extra $50 on a bigger engine stand. Oh well, I got by as it was. On the upside I suppose I can use it as a transmission stand

yeah, it worked well. I actually borrowed that from another forum member (67Mach1). Let me tell you, it was a pain in the @$$ not having that leveler when I was putting the engine back in. But I was in a hurry (I decreed it MUST be in that weekend). Buying a leveler would be money well spent.

Well, I tried to clean it up as much as possible beforehand, but it turns out the machine shop was capable of handling that by themselves.

For all of the engine accessories, I used either "heavy duty degreaser" from harbor freight, or Marine Clean from the POR-15 store.

I highly recommend Marine Clean.

We cleaned my sons frame for painting this weekend & used Easy Off oven cleaner.Scraped the big stuff then just sprayed the snot out of it & pressure washed it. We are going to do the same with the engine to paint it but instead of pressur washer we will use garden hose. It's kinda hard to see real good but if you look at the front crossmember you can see how clean it came out with darned little elbow grease.
