More Cold Air!

Hey guys have any of you upgraded to a bigger blower motor or squirrel cage in order to get more air flow out of your A/C system. It seems like the air ducts just don't have much flow compared to a newer car. Do you know of any way to upgrade this with parts from a newer model or aftermarket stuff. It may be the case that the evaporator may not be able to deal with the extra flow and the air will just come out at a warmer temp. Have any of you guys toyed with this?

There was a post a while back where someone upgraded to a fan from a 90s extended cab, I think. he said it was much better. You might find it if you search.

A new fan might be pretty reasonable at an Auto Parts Store.

That's what I was thinking. I bet you could be a complete assembly pretty reasonable at Auto Zone.

I plan to pull the interior out of my 77 this winter to finish putting the Brown Bread in it. When I do I'm going to see what it takes to get better airflow from the A/C system. I'll add this mod to the list....

I'll give it a try too. I just had the A/C fixed in my 79 and it doesn't blow very cold or allot of air. I suspect they didn't put enough freon in it but I give this a try too. Autozone lists it for $31 and Partsamerica.com lists it for $36 and it has the squirrel cage

Probably not worth a trip to a wrecking yard for the price of a new one.


BTW: anybody have the part number handy for the variable orifices of rour trucks A/C I want to try that next.

I like this part from Autozone- INCLUDES BLOWER WHEEL ALL OF AUTOZONE`S BLOWER MOTORS ARE NEW, NOT REBUILT, WITH A LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY.

That looks very familiar. I'll bet that part number would cross reference with quit a few mid 90's GM cars/trucks.

I am curious as why it blows more. Is the motor designed to run at a faster RPM than the earlier motors? Anyone know the RPM of the 73-87 blower motor?

Strictly a guess on my part, but I think the rpm's are the same and there are more fins(or a different pitch) on the cage.

One thing that the poster also did was reinstall new foam to seal the all the vents and connections better. I'm not sure what its called, its foam on one side and sticky tape on the other. Most I have seen that are original turn to dust if you mess with them or wont stick where they are supposed to. That itself will cause an air leak.
