gas tank cleaning

I've run a search and read several threads where bolts, chain, etc were put into a tank and used to clean out the rust. I did the same thing ..and ran it through a pressure washer for several minutes. Question is, will this keep it clean for a few years, or do I need to have it sealed up? Local shops want $150 to clean and seal the tank. For that price, I could buy a new tank.

Will the cleaning that I've done last for a few years? How long does it take for the tank to get rusty and nasty again on the inside?

Re: gas tank cleaning

Buy the summit 16 gal fuel cell.$160

Or pay the $150. I've paid it a few times and it always lasted as long as I had the truck. They clean it out, pressure test it, weld spots, dip it in por-15
=better then new.

Agreed 100%
Don't let them dip it onless they will replace it when it starts leaking at the seams later. (talking the acid dip... not POR)

Re: gas tank cleaning

We cleaned out my buddies gas tank to his '68 using similar method. then we installed it, filled it up with gas & a gas dryer (just in case). We still went thru fuel filters alot. The more it was driven, the longer they lasted. It took a little over 2 months to get it to quit going thru fuel filters... Had one on the carb & on in-line. The carb one was changed once a month, it was the other one that we kept going thru...

Re: gas tank cleaning

1969K10 - Thanks. That's the type of info I'm after. The whole purpose of me cleaning this thing out was to stop the fuel filter clogging problem. Its tough to drive the truck into town if you don't expect it to make it all the way back!

Re: gas tank cleaning

Sometimes it depends upon what they line it with after cleaning. I have heard stories of the liner coming off if not properly applied.

I think where it will rust, after your own cleaning process, will be if it is left close to empty a lot and the air gets to it and starts to rust again.

Re: gas tank cleaning

I cleaned a rusty fuel tank last spring by placing about 10 pounds of drywall screws in it and shaking and rocking it back and forth. It takes time but does a good job. Be prepaired to use a magnet to get all the screws out. I rinsed it out with water when finished and then set it out in the sun to dry.

Re: gas tank cleaning

I took mine to a radiator (sp) shop and they cleaned for like $40. Had it done like 6 months ago. I know it will rust again but not for awhile. But will convert to under the bed in a few months.

Re: gas tank cleaning

Well, pressure washing the inside of the tank seems to have solved the problem. I'm still getting a bit of trash in the filter, but that my have already been in the line. Looks like it knocked out all of the big stuff and left it clean enough for me to get by for a while.
