Non Chevy engines in Chevy trucks.

I have a 81 3/4 ton 2 w/d that I'm putting a Pontiac 400 in. The 350 has a main bearing rattle. Are 3/4 ton mounts in the same position as a 1/2 ton? I had to use the lower mounting holes on the mount plates, also had to move the plates back 1 inch on the drivers side and 1 1/2 inches on the passenger side. Then drill holes in the frame and crossmember. I've read where others have done this swap in 1/2 tons and just had to move the frame mounts up to the upper holes. I'm using the original turbo 400 with a TCI adapter plate so the trans is mounted in the original location. Has anyone else done any kind of swaps like this or other engine familys?

Thanks,
Eric

Lightbulb Re: Non Chevy engines in Chevy trucks.

As far as i know all the crossmembers for the 1/2, 3/4, & 1 ton trucks are the same as far as the engine mount locations go the only thing thats differant is weather it has a big or small block thats what the other set of holes are there for.

Now the only thing i can think of is maybe the crossmember is differant for the diesel equipt trucks???

Maybe you misunderstood what you read or that person didn't explain what or how he did it clear enough.

I haven't seen any 73-87 chevy trucks with anything other than a chevy BBC or SBC engine in them.

Good luck

Re: Non Chevy engines in Chevy trucks.

I drove a 70s 1/2 ton about 20 years ago that had a Pontic 400. The owner told me he used mounts out of the donor car (I can't remember what it was), and it was a direct bolt-in. I wish I could remember more details...

Re: Non Chevy engines in Chevy trucks.

I had it mocked up in the truck with a bare block and original transmission. The adapter plate adapts the Chevy transmission bell housing to a BOP engine. The block mounts to use are out of a 73-77 Lemans or Grand Prix.

Thanks,
Eric

Re: Non Chevy engines in Chevy trucks.

Some of our trucks came with Olds motors in them stock (in the way of 5.7L diesels), so I couldn't see that it would be too much trouble swapping in a BOP engine.

Re: Non Chevy engines in Chevy trucks.

on the 73-87 i'm putting a caddy 500 in
the only thing i have to move is the fram side of the motor mounts about 2 inches forward and trim the coners if you are using stock steering

Re: Non Chevy engines in Chevy trucks.

I have the engine and trans bolted down. Starter is on and wired, routing fuel lines. Got a set of 3 tube headers from a friend that actually fit, just have to bend shift linkage.
