Which carb should I go with
I hate asking this kind of question, but I need the opinions of those much wiser than myself. The Quadrajet on my truck (the 86) is shot. It's running real rich, leaking gas around the gaskets and into the intake, so it's going to need a complete rebuild ( which I don't want to attempt). I'm not sure whether I should have it professionally rebuilt, or just go with something like a Performer series carb or maybe a Holley. The truck is not a performance truck, just a daily driver with 305 engine and auto. I am just looking for something that runs smooth and is dependable without a lot of fuss. Would appreciate your recommendations and if anyone recommends a Holley, please tell me what model number as they've got a gazillion different models to choose from.
Thanks for your help boys. (whoops...and girls)

Re: Which carb should I go with
86 will the Performer bolt up to the stock intake, or will I need to buy another intake also? Also, what about all of the hookups, ie, vacuum, pwr brakes, throttle linkages, etc., any particular snafus there I should know about?

Re: Which carb should I go with
I went through all of this earlier this year...
You need an adapter or a new intake to use the performer. I was going to use a performer, but after adding up the price of all of the brackets I would have to buy from edelbrock, and the cost of their A/C solenoid to make it work with my A/C, cruise, and everything, it cost as much as a nice quadrajet. The quadrajet was a bolt-in that took very little time to install. I bought one from Jet Performance. Actually I bought it through Summit, which was MUCH cheaper than buying one from Jet. It is a very nice quality rebuild, and it gets rid of the wire that goes to the carb on the '85 and '86 q-jets. Slonaker |

Re: Which carb should I go with
I called JET Performance, and got a real human on the line. He recommended their stage I truck carb for my stock 350.
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku It was $340 from Summit, and came with a base gasket, a gasket for the air cleaner, and a connector for the choke (mine was broken, so that was great!). Slonaker |
