Work on my engine
I did some work on my engine today. The enine builder didn't do a good job sealing stuff up, but I guess he knew I would replace the parts. I put an edelbrocker performer intake on it, as well as my fuel pump and other random things. I still need to order a bunch of new parts, hopefully sometime this week. I don't know whether to buy chrome accesories or stock looking ones, I love shiny things but they cost more money =(. I will order most of my frontal accessories tomorrow, those I can't get cheaper through napa. Then I will connect my transmission to the engine (paint it first), and finally drop it in the truck. At that point there will still be a lot to do: rear end, brakes, plumping, cooling stuff, etc. Theres just so much I have to do that i NEVER took into account, at least not until it started breakin the bank I'm happy though, i will get as many shinies on it as I can afford. I decided not to change out the heads just yet, i will stick with the 305 heads. I know most people would dissaprove, but i look at it as a means of staying outta trouble. I will bump up the heads to vortec heads when I learn more about what they actually do and when I get more money, also change the rocker arms (is that what they are) and other things. For now i think it will satisfy me seeing as how it will be my first vehicle ever to make more than like 10 hp

Re: Work on my engine
YA KNOW...WHEN I WAS ABOUT TEN OR SO I GOT THIS MODEL OF A SMALL BLOCK CHEVY. IT WAS ABOUT 18" SQUARE & MOST OF IT WAS CLEAR PLASTIC. EVERYTHING WORKED ON IT, & IT GAVE ME A PRETTY GOOD IDEA OF WHAT EVERY THING DID, & HOW ALL THE COMPONENTS OPERATED TOGETHER. I HAVEN'T SEEN ONE IN YEARS & DON'T IMAGINE THEY STILL MAKE THEM. (I ALSO HAD A MODEL OF A HUMAN TORSO THAT WAS CLEAR PLASTIC ALSO) I WISH I STILL HAD IT, BUT IT PROBABLY WOUND UP IN ONE OF MY MOMS GARAGE SALES BACK AROUND 1969. DOES ANYBODY REMEMBER THEM?? I SURE WOULD LIKE TO GET MY HANDS ON ONE. THAT THING TAUGHT ME MORE ABOUT HOW A SMALL BLOCK OPERATED THAN ANY OTHER LEARNING DEVICE I FOUND. JOHN

Re: Work on my engine
I think I still have one (all done) in a box somewhere in the garage. I bought it to teach my boys how engines work when they were young, great model. they do all there own work now.

Re: Work on my engine
i'm guessing its a 350? with the 305 heads you will have higher compression. so they wont rob any hp.

Re: Work on my engine
the big problem with most of the chrome stuff on a basic daily driver type vehicle is that it's not real good chrome to start with and it goes down hill real fast// stuff to really avoid is valve covers thermo housings and timing covers because the cheaper ones rarely seal well // aluminium accessoriers tend to be heavier made and 20-30 year old stuff can always be brought back to life these valve covers are about 40years old
i always see the visable V8 models at toy shows and auto swapmeets

Re: Work on my engine
My Dad got me the visible V-8 model when I was a kid (for Christmas I think), he helped me put it together, was a lot of fun as I remember. I don't know if they still make them, I haven't seen one here in Canada anyway in ages.

Re: Work on my engine
THATS IT!!! I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMEND ONE OF THESE FOR ANY ENGINE NOVICE, NO MATTER WHAT THE AGE. SHOOT... I MAY ORDER ONE MYSELF, IF ONLY BECAUSE I'VE MISSED MINE FOR ABOUT FOUR DECADES. JOHN
(OR BETTER YET... MAYBE I'LL ORDER ONE FOR EACH OF MY GRANDSONS)
