Instrument Panel Lights
OK...so what is the hot setup here? Mine are so dim I can barely see them...some are even burned out...who would have guessed? Is conversion to LEDs the way to go? If I got LEDs am I going to lose points on my 100 pt. restoration? Will the judges even notice?

Re: Instrument Panel Lights
LEDs rock... you'll need a 4 or 5 diode replacement to gain any real improvement.
No one will ever notice except at night. |

Re: Instrument Panel Lights
I use the original style, but the hotter output version. That's plenty for me and I usually turn them down unless I'm in the city with lot's of bright street lamps.

Re: Instrument Panel Lights
I aint the inner tins gloss white and get just as good a reflection with using stock 194's. No one will ever see the inside of your dash and you can do this on the cheap for less than $5 and little bit of your time. Here is a night pic of a yellow faced dash that has been painted gloss whiteon the inside and using stock 194's

Re: Instrument Panel Lights
your wrong.
194 for the dash, and for the side markers. 168, which is twice the out put of a 194 is used in the turn signal indicators on the dash, and can be found at any parts store, they look EXACTLY like the 194's do. |

Re: Instrument Panel Lights
Does painting the tins white or chrome mean that the cluster glow will now be white instead of green? I would like to keep the green light.

Re: Instrument Panel Lights
not trying to be picky but the 168 lamps are not really twice as bright as the 194's..... 194 light output is 2 candlepower, .27 amp ; 168 is 3 candlepower, .35 amp. 175's are available also - 5 candlepower, .58 amp. (This info from a Phillips lighting catalog ). The 175's are not that readily found.... the local NAPA outlet has them, tho.
