found a 500 caddy engine.

I was at the local pic and pull last week and stumbled across this huge green caddy, So I decided I would go over and pop the hood just to see what lay beneith it, WOW everything, The whole nine yards, engine tranny and all the goodies. Wish I had the money to buy the whole car.

Re: found a 500 caddy engine.

longhorn is the guru on this subject.. i just know what my parts car is. '72 eldorado w/w 500!'

though whenever andy looks at this, i know its not needed really because the engine is already a torque monster, but what crank does a guy need to make it into a 570 stroker? just for shock factor? would it be worth it?

(sorry for the thread theft)

Re: found a 500 caddy engine.

a 570? While I don't pay much attention to the strokers becouse of the stupid money involved... I don't recall ever hearing of that.

There's enough shock value when you open the hood and they see that huge motor in there.
For example... here is a truck with just another lame ass small block;

Now, look at this;

That air filter is not being used anymore, that was just to keep the mouse poop outta the carb. Hell, that whole engine is gone now, that was the old 425. Got a 500 in there now.

Re: found a 500 caddy engine.

oh yes and it is a thing of beauty.
yea i really dont know much about the stroker thing either, just heard from some guy who pry didnt know what he was talking about.. cause to make a stroker, dont ya have to put in the crank out of a bigger inch model, into the smaller inch engine? I HAVE NO IDEA! and the 500 is the biggest production one made from what ive heard.. so it definitely sounds like mad money dumping to get there. .. i guess ill stick with 'normal' 500!

BTW is that factory style cruise in there? always considered that mod, but didnt know if it was more trouble than it was worth on a non-daily driver...

Re: found a 500 caddy engine.

yeah, that's stock cruise controll parts there.
You can get aftermarket cranks for the 500 to stroke it... but 70 cubes is askin a lot.
The 500 is the largest CID GAS engine in post WW II engines.

You asked for it.

Make that largest CID gas engine in passenger vehicles.

IH made a 549 CID gasser. V8, but the block on one of those LVs weighs about 2000 lbs. That engine later become the DV 549 and DV 551.

I also believe there were some even larger gasoline engines in big trucks availible in the 600+ CID range. Just speaking of post WWII production. Diesel engines were starting to come out in the 50s, but they weren't yet *that* widespread.

I belive there were even I-6 motors of over 500 CID after WWII.

Very nice Jason...now you just gotta get rid of that K&N filter and get one on there that'll actually stop more than bricks and birds.

Re: found a 500 caddy engine.

no, i converted the blazer to 2wd. my point for using the 500 was shock factor, the weight advantage of it over a big block chevy and the fact that i can say i got a k/500. a 4wd caddy powered blazer would be an interesting rig.

Re: found a 500 caddy engine.

i have a 500 caddy [up for grabs] and i dont fully get the "shock" factor. yes it is 500 ci but the factory valve spring is like 60lbs, i can full on hit the v/s with my bare hand and commpress it. they will float valves at 4500rpm and are insanely $$$$$ to buy parts for.

i will take a bbc with no frame or mount mods any day.

some people don't understand...that's cool.
Yes, paper air filters. That K&N isn't cleaning the air much at all.

Would you please explain your viewpint on this?
I would like to hear your reasons, referring to the K and N air filters.

Re: found a 500 caddy engine.

Simple, lab tests show that they suck.
You can see the side effects at home too.
New engine, chainge the oil, it'll come out pretty clean. Add the K&N, and the oil will come out dirtier.
Also, think about it... they say it works better after it gets a little dirty... that's becouse the dirt is clogging the huge holes in the filter media. Also, how would it improve HP? Only way... to increase air flow. Only way to increase air flow.. let more through.
You could also ask any independant oil lab... they'll tell you that K&N totally sucks.
It's kinda like the fram oil filters... it won't void your warranty, and it PROBABLY won't hurt your engine.... just shorten it's life a little.

Re: found a 500 caddy engine.

Large trucks (18 wheelers) only use pleated paper air filters. If there was something better and less expensive ie reusable, they would be using it. Their engines and down time are too expensive to be using inferior products on. Take a lesson from them.

If you want more air flow, install a larger element or stack two of them.

Re: found a 500 caddy engine.

There are cheap chrome valve covers, and any air filter will work on the carb... then there are some super duper expensive alluminum ones that are VERY nice.
