Header Opinions
What are some of your guys header opinions. What company do you like the best, meaning fits well, flows well, most horsepower gain if any. And what should I look for in a header? 16 guage steel 18 guage, 3in collector or 2 1/2 or does any of that make to much of a difference.

every set I've ever had, you always need to trim a little material off the inside frame rail on the passenger side. On a mild to moderate small block you will make more power across the range with 2.5 collectors, your gonna' end up with 2.5, or less, forward pipe so you might as well avoid bottle necking the flow by drastically stepping it down from 3" collectors. Small blocks with less than 350 HP need a certain amount of back-pressure to retain low end torque, so don't go crazy with large pipes.

hooker, dynomax, hedman, cyclone, I always prefer to trim the frame instead of dinging in the tube.

Ok what about the guage of the steel. Does it make any difference on the heat or longevity of the header? So where any of those that you mentioned joe any better than any of the other ones?

The thicker the better. The thicker it is the less chance it will flex.

I luv mine, lots of pic's in the "GQ" siggy link, NO FRAME mods, and
NO PIPE dinging, they also have the newer style BALL collectors, I have Hedman "ELITE" Ceramic Coated, they were $275 to my door, the flanges were so thick I had to TOSS my ARP bolts & use theirs.

I'm going to order a pair for my Jimmy soon as I have time to call Hedman
again in Cali and confirm the right part number, I called Summit 7 times in the past before I ordered the other set, then called Hedman, then called to Jeg's and ordered them, 7 calls to Summit, 7 different part numbers

make sure you take notice while tightening your headers, they don't touch the frame until they've been tightened and you have to look real hard to see it.

I have had several different sets of Hookers and never had any kind of fitment problems. Granted my frame is newer but the fit seems to be about the same as was on my daughters 72 Blazer. Her's was close.

ANOTHER THING I RECOMEND IS USING COPPER GASKETS & "STAGE 8" HEADER LOCKING BOLTS. I HATE DEALING WITH HEADERS. I LIKE TO SEAL EM UP & NOT TOUCH EM AGAIN FOR YEARS OR UNTIL I CHANGE MOTORS AT LEAST. JOHN

I have HookerSuper Comps on mine and the fit is good. The other thing to consider is how easy the spark plugs are to access. Hookers are all easy!

I think they say for offroad use only because of smog or sound or something of that nature.. you want a nice thick gauge flange and also the thickest gauge for the tube also for reasons of rust and durability, they will last longer. I have thorley tri-y's and had to grind the frame back a little but they only touched the frame a tiny bit other than that, I have no complaints.

So buying the Hooker Comp. headers and the Hooker exhaust system from Summit would probably be the best way to go. I mean the exhaust system is supposed to fit exactly to the headers and the headers sound like they have no problems really so it should work out good.
