Got it crankin but back fires through the carb, timing help
Someone once sent me the firing order diagram on the 350 and the distributor cap order for the plugs,
when i replaced my HEI with a new HEI i just replaced the cap assembly not the the entire distributor. i moved nothing, do i have to re-set the timing or did i screw up the wire order on the new cap, its possible because some of the tape fell off and i guessed on where the wire went but now i'm getting a strong crank from the new mini starter but getting spurting out the carb.

Re: Got it crankin but back fires through the carb, timing help
Sounds to me like you've got a few wires on wrong. Remove the #1 plug and the main power wire to coil and have a friend bump the starter, watching the rotation of the rotor, with your finger over the hole until it blows air past your finger then start on the cap where the rotor tip is pointing to and go 18436572. Leave the bolt for the dist loose so you can turn it to adjust once it fires.

I would say you have all the wires off 1 hole. pull #1 plug and find tdc then see if rotor is on #1.

Re: Got it crankin but back fires through the carb, timing help
i have an ACCEL HEI, does it make a difference? should i take the ignition cap off or the entire assembly? (3 push in screws) ?hard to see with the wires attached but if this is the way? is there another way?

Once your up on compression #1 (blows finger off) Pull the cap off and rotor should be pointing at #1 or close. If not you can move all the wires or turn dist. untill #1 is at rotor. Double check that your wires are right.I don't remember off hand but Shortbed70's fireing order sounds right.

First I would check to make sure the wires are on in the right order. If so then go the TDC route.

Re: Got it crankin but back fires through the carb, timing help
Krue's right .
All you need to do is line up the timing mark on the balancer with zero on the pointer and see where the rotor is pointing. If you have not pulled the distributor the rotor should be pointing at the front of the engine or the firewall. If it's pointing at the firewall then that is number six and if you rotate the engine one revolution until the marks line up the rotor will point at the front of the engine. This will be number one and you can install the distributor cap and put number one plug wire there and then no. 8 will be next going clockwise, then 4,3,6,5,7,2. Here's a picture to help. Remember the wires can go anywhere on the cap as long as the rotor points to number one and the wires follow the firing order. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Got it crankin but back fires through the carb, timing help
I did a search for firing order. And found this. I’m wondering is the firing order is different using points on the stock dizzy. The diagram says all v8’s with HEI.
I was going to double check my plug wires and think it’s marked wrong on one of them, but seems way wrong. Please help. Thanks, s/t

Re: Got it crankin but back fires through the carb, timing help
I guess it's the same, I just checked it and that's what I have marked.

Re: Got it crankin but back fires through the carb, timing help
Remove all of your wires from the cap(not the plugs).Make a mark on the cap and the body of the dizzy at the terminal in front of the tach and bat hook-ups,this will be #1. Remove cap and number 1 plug and drivers side valve cover.Rotate engine over by hand(5/8 socket and ratchet w/extension).Watch the valves, when the intake valve closes (and before the exhaust valve opens) you will only need to rotate very slowly until #1 piston is TDC,this is the compression stroke, line up the timing marks at 0 deg. Your rotor should be pointing towards the #1 cylinder "area"(refer to the mark on the dizzy should be pointing right at it) I f the rotor is not pointing at your mark then restab the dizzy to line up this mark and the rotor.Install cap, wires 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 in a clockwise rotation, reconnect the power wires leave vac. advance disconnected and vac. source plugged. Start engine, set timing and reconnect vac.Make sure you tighten down the dizzy.YOU'RE DONE!
