What kind of engine?

Hi:
I came cross this wrecked mid 1990 cadillac fleetwood with good engine and tranny. Acutally the whole car is very clean just got rearended somebody badly but engine is ok. Engine has 77000 miles on it. I believe I am gona need an engine very soon, is this something I can use?

Side track: I have a 1979 Z28 with blown engine as my next project. Is the above engine has any vavue for that if I can not use it in my truck?

I think those came with the 4.5 V8, but it's a transverse mount so you would need to modify some stuff to make it work. I think it would be more work than it's worth, but that's just my opinion. As far as the Z28, if you're asking if you could put that motor in it, you would obviously still have the transverse mount issue, plus I don't think it would make enough power to satisfy you.

The early Caddy Northstar has been known to drop cylinder liners,so be careful with the Caddy.

Wasn't the 90 fleetwood still rwd? I had a deville with the fwd 4.5. I believe the fleetwood used the small block. I think it is a 305 (5.0). I could be wrong though.

Just read the post again....MID 90 Fleetwood could have the LT1 engine. Make sure the label under the hood says 5.7 and not 4.3. The 4.3 looks identical to the 5.7 but is very slow.

My father drive a 91 fleetwood (90-92 were the same) it's rwd and came with a 305. It could have the optional 350 it would have a badge lower right side of the trunk saying 5.7liter

If it's RWD then it would have a 305 as standard, or a 350 was optional.

Agreed. Those cars were B-bodies, same as the Chevy Caprice, Buick Roadmaster...

Anyway, from '91 to '93, they were throttle body injected small block Chev's, although I thought they came with the 350 only. Maybe it was just the more desirable option. Backed by a 4L60 (no e) trans. In '94 they went to the LT-1 or L-99 (same engine, one's 5.7, the other is 4.3 V8) which had the 4L60e, tuned port injection, etcetera.

They're good engines, with a weakness in the timing chain. They stretch and make a diesel sounding noise when they get older. Replacing with a performance single roller set should be a permanent fix.

The 305 makes 160 horsepower, and the 350 makes 180. I believe torque on the 350 was right around 300 foot pounds.

The L-99 4.3L V8 makes 200 horsepower, with maybe 250 torque. The LT-1, I've heard, makes 250 horsepower in the Cadillac, 260 horsepower in other B-body cars. I know the B-body LT-1 has iron heads, and I think the LT-1 Caddy had a belt driven water pump and fan, stealing a few more horses. Torque is 320 foot pounds.

It's easy to switch a TBI small block over to old vehicle use; just change the intake. I don't know that you'd gain or lose any horses, though. If you wanted more out of them, you're looking at a different cam and heads.

It's also possible to switch the LT engines over, or leave them as they are. However, the cost gets a LOT more expensive to even *blink* at one of those engines, let alone pulling it, the wiring, and the computer, and dropping it in an older car.

As for the engine in your Camaro, it's 6 of one, half a dozen of the other if your Caddy is TBI. Either will drop in easily. It's all a matter of what you want out of them.
