my FREE FREE GMC 3/4 ton 4X4, did I mention FREE!!
I am not sure of the year, kinda hoping a GMC head can shed some light the rear is a 14 bolt (not HO with the smooth rear cover) and a closed knuckle drum brake frontend? I nagged the neighbor where this has been sitting for 2-3 yrs, and he finally said take it!!!! It has everything I need to make my 68 short fleet mobile in 3/4ton gear!! Did I mention it has a new 350, bullet proof front and rear bumpers (look at the front, not even a scratch from the wreck, just bent the mounts[can/will be fixed and reused on the 68] as well as a d@mn WARN WHINCH!!) I wanted to kiss, him but I remained cool and acted like this free truck was no big deal!! What do you guys think? I picked this up for nothing and traded my rolled 68 4X4 burb and a newly rebuilt TBI (like $600-800 worth of parts)for the 69-70 Short Stepper in my other post titled the same. Not bad EH?! Now I need to decide what to keep and what to sell, ebay is my friend!!

wow what ever it hit deffinitly felt it. obviously free is allways the best price so major kudos for that. here's my thoughts on it. obviously take the stuff you want, the bumpers "which look killer btw" and eveything else you mentioned. pull the front clip and check out the cab. if it's fairly straight sell that too. my best guess is it's a 69 but check the vin. as for the axles, please pull the covers and check the gears. taking a hit that hard could have damaged the ring/pinion.

Re: my FREE FREE GMC 3/4 ton 4X4, did I mention FREE!!
Yeah. that's what's cofusing me, the front is drum, but wouldn't the rear then be an HO not the 14 bolt? Where is the year stamped, i looked at the vin plate in the door nothing? I am thinking it was pieced together, not really concerned, I like the drums, the only concern is that the front and rear gear ratios match after that it's all gravy!

Sorry, I missed the drum part, and I don't know much on the 4X4..like when they went open or closed... or honestly, what that even means.

Re: my FREE FREE GMC 3/4 ton 4X4, did I mention FREE!!
14 bolt rear is a 73 or newer item. i'm unsure on the front differential--looking at the hubs, the don't look like dana 44 from the drum brake era. they look like dana 60 style. look on the cast webbing on the front pumpkin and see if it's got a "44" or a "60" cast into it. a better pic of the front diff would be a big help.
nice score for free

Re: my FREE FREE GMC 3/4 ton 4X4, did I mention FREE!!
Sweet find. Man I knew these things were built like a tank but man. Id say 69-70. Hay longhorn man correct me if I am wrong but wasnt the 69-70 grill all chrome and the 71-72 have a large part of the grill painted flat black?

yes, however, that black part was in an indentation that seperated the grill in 2, that recessed area is there, but the black is missing...worn off, which is very common.

with a 14 bolt and a closed knuckle d44, it's definitely not totally stock. but for free? I'd take it. Good score!

Re: my FREE FREE GMC 3/4 ton 4X4, did I mention FREE!!
he said it had a winch so it's definatly not gonna be a stock truck. but it's an awsome deal for a parts truck.

Re: my FREE FREE GMC 3/4 ton 4X4, did I mention FREE!!
Nah, not stock, aluminum intake, holley carb, hei, just glad he didn't over do it with a ton of crap. I'll have it torn down next weekend (Probably oen the diffs to check ring and pinion and gear ratio. I will try to fire the motor as well. I was hoping that it has the 205 vs the older t-case but free is free and I am not looking the gift horse in the mouth!!

Re: my FREE FREE GMC 3/4 ton 4X4, did I mention FREE!!
I believe disc brakes were optional in 1971, and standard equipment in 1972, correct? So drums would be correct for that year.

Nope, stock discs after 1970.The 70's had the open knuckle so if has a closed knuckle drum brake axle it was 67-69

Re: my FREE FREE GMC 3/4 ton 4X4, did I mention FREE!!
no d60's except in jeep gladiators, 4x4 3/4-1t was a d44 or a napco.
the rear is either a d60 or eaton, you said it had a smooth rear cover, 14b has a diamond shape with a squared off peak. if its a th350 auto it has 205 t case. hopefuly that front bumper is still straight cause it looks bad ass. what winch? |
