Question in reference to my previous brake question???

I told you guys that i was going to replace the rear wheel cylinder. And some of you suggested that i do the other and probably the shoes too. Well i bought it all tonight and plan on starting the job in the morning. Someone said that it reqiures special tools but, i could get by on the house hold ones i have.

So my question is what are these tools and where can i get them?

Re: Question in reference to my previous brake question???

The special tools I used are vise grips & pliers for the spring removal and installation of the shoes & a flat bladed screw driver to adjust the shoes. They do have the tools that do this at any auto parts store. But, my way of thinking is that how often will I use them, so why spend the money. You'll also need some white litho grease for the backing plates where the metal part of the shoes rests on. Get a can of spray brake cleaner and some emery cloth or 80 grit sand paper to scuff the shoes after you install them. Make sure your brake drums are in good shape too. If they are scored really bad, you should have them turned.

I do one side at a time, so that I can use the opposite side as a reference as to how things go back together.

This is just my way of doing the drum brakes. Others may disagree, but has always worked for me......

Re: Question in reference to my previous brake question???

these are the types of tools you should get, to ease removing and installing the springs. they make the job go alot faster ,they're cheap and will last a long time my father gave me these over 40years ago and i dont know how long he used them b-4 passing them down to my so they've literally done thousands of brake jobs with out failing
