Where you mounting your fire extinguisher
Because of all the exploring and adjusting and plain monkeying around i do under my dash and firewall, i'm always sniffing the air when i'm driving if i smell something, anything like fire, its always either a car in front or someone buring leaves but just in case i carry a fire extinguisher under my seat. But it bangs around and i know, god forbid, if i actually do spark a light it wont be where i can reach it in my panic.
has anyone mounted one in a handy but hidden place?

Re: Where you mounting your fire extinguisher
Mine's bolted to the l.h. seat frame , when you get in the truck it's the first thing you see , kinda reminds ya every time the doors open . I wouldn't drive an old truck without an extinguisher . If your worried about wiring fires you can also use a disconnect switch to isolate the battery , i use ones from Caterpillar machines , real heavy duty . Also a little bit of a theft deterrent , although the switch can be jumped .

Re: Where you mounting your fire extinguisher
One thing I need to add to my list, and still have not, 409 do you
have a pic of the switch? kinda curious about it, sounds like good spot to mount it on a truck, but what about a Blazer / Jimmy ???

Re: Where you mounting your fire extinguisher
I used to have mine mounted to the seat bracket with a nylon zip tie on the drivers side (the bracket is zip tied not the extinguishter). I had to move it to the passenger side because it interfered with the seat adjustment (wife couldn't drive it). In an ideal situation it should be mounted so it can be reached from the drivers seat while still buckled in. I felt having it on the passenger side (or loose under the seat) was better than not having one at all.

Re: Where you mounting your fire extinguisher
I have a 71' Cheyenne and I have a couple of small bolt holes in the passenger side kick panel that I bet were used at one time for a fire extinguisher. I've seen pictures of others using that area for one. I'm kind of into the totally stock thing, so I'm not sure if a fire extinguisher was an dealer option at one time or not? I've thought about puttting one there, but haven't pursued. Does anyone know about a fire extinguisher being an dealer option?

Re: Where you mounting your fire extinguisher
IMO a master battery cut switch is more important than a fire extinguisher. If you have a wiring short, the fire extinguisher wont really help if you cant stop the problem quick. Being without both of these could turn your pride & joy into trash in no time. These old trucks should have BOTH for sure.

Re: Where you mounting your fire extinguisher
After I had a bit of an electrical fire under the hood, I put one in my Blazer under the passenger seat. I used 2 hose clamps to secure the backing bracket that came with the extinguisher to a bar underneath the seat. That way it is out of sight when the top is off so nobody borrows it. Tip the seat forward and hit the quick release on the backing bracket and you are ready to use it.

Re: Where you mounting your fire extinguisher
I hate to say it but, for as much flag waving as WalMart does , they sell more imported stuff than an asian market! Sorry for getting off topic 69.

Re: Where you mounting your fire extinguisher
thats for sure! But i'm not one to protest Walmart, they give the public what they want, but as long as people demand low prices, they will get what they want, low quality as well. Its the US people who are selling out the US job market but i shop there too so when and where is the only question.

Re: Where you mounting your fire extinguisher
This is a good reminder that I need to get one together.
I think that they are much more pricey, but there is a type of chemical F/E called Halotron-not sure if that is a brand name, or the name of the stuff-but after it does it's job it disappears, vaporizes I guess, so there is no chemical mess to clean up as well as the fire mess. I had to put out an engine fire on my boat one time and that dang white powder is still all over the motor. It's kinda tough to get cleaned off.

Re: Where you mounting your fire extinguisher
pritch, it is "Haylon"(sp) and companies use them in their computer rooms.IIRC they don't cause shorts (no moisture),no messy white crap, and the expectorant from them disapates completely.I haven't used oe but I know it is the same system used in drag cars and other forms of racing.
